First annual Maymont Park Festival to kick off this weekend

RICHMOND, VA -- Neither Hurricane Isabel nor an additional 5 inches of rain Monday night has thwarted plans for Richmond Sportsbacker's Ukrops XC Festival at Richmond's Maymont Park this weekend. Kicking off on Friday night will be the college and adult men and women's 18-24 and 25-29 bracket open races. Then on Saturday morning a lengthy list of area high schools will face off following opening events for elementary and middle schools. Featured match-ups will be Central Region Cream of the Crop boys teams Maggie Walker and Douglas Freeman. AAA powerhouses Maggie Walker, Forest Park, and Douglas Freeman will be challenging the #1 Cream of the Crop girls team from Western Albemarle. Attempting to make a good showing against the public schools will be St. Christopher's, the #1 ranked private boys school, and St. Catherine's, the #1 ranked girls school. Individually, five of the current top 15 AAA boys will square off. The list includes Woodside junior Derrick Robbins, J.R. Tucker sophomore Michael Chapa, Maggie Walker senior Daniel Howard, Massaponax junior Michael Disilvestro, and Forest Park junior Bryce Iverson. From the private schools, St. Christopher seniors Danny Ludeman and Matthew Downs will be trying to show they deserve comparison with their public school counterparts. The girls event should be quite a show between the Fanning sisters of Western Albemarle, the Forest Park duo of Beth Fahey and Stephanie Slekis, St Catherine's Katie Doswell, and Kellam senior Natalie Sherbak. Then add to the fray visiting teams from North Carolina and New York. Following the high school events will be the remaining adult open events running through Saturday afternoon.
