This past weekend's Fred Hardy Invitational at Fork Union Military's Estes Athletic Center might have been one of MileStat.com's best covered meets today in terms of both photo and video coverage. We have race videos from each every section/heat of every running events (including rare in-race commentary) as well as video coverage from every field event! Between our two great and hard working photographers Heidi Raab and Arnel Gonce, MileStat.com also has a grand total of 6,174 photos from all running events and field events at the meet! See for yourself below!
The on-site coverage of the Fred Hardy Invitational is a great example of how subscription revenue is used to cover the sport in a way that would not have been possible pre-MileStat.com and even the early days of the site as well as first years of going to the subscription model. The total expense of $500 for the meet coverage included: second videographer ($150), two photographers ($300), and a tank of gas ($50). Without subscriptions, that kind of coverage would have never happened and people would come home from the meet to only find meet results and no photos or videos anywhere. Might have even had to wait the next day to see results instead of getting tweet updates during the meet or full event results posted while at the meet.
The awesome truth is that we can do even more as far as providing better and more consistent coverage of more meets. If people that are using the site and its premium content are actually paid subscribers, the coverage budget can continue to increase and we can have more quality coverage contributors. Despite my move to Austin in March to take on the MileSplit National position full-time, I'm going to make sure the site is left in good hands with a capable replacement site editor and increase the budget for freelance photographers, videographers, and writers for the website to cover more meets and at a higher quality. However, the ball is still in the Virginia high school track & field community's court to move the site forward to continue to grow and improve. The less people who cheat out and limit the site's coverage budget by sharing subscriptions, the coverage will only continue to improve and more meets as well as more athletes will be featured on the website. MileStat.con and myself personally have done a lot to advance the sport in the state over the last 13 years in Virginia and I plan to make sure to have a hand and role in that trend continuing even while in Texas, but need the continued support of the great majority of the Virginia high school track & field community. We have built something great in Virginia and can continue to make it greater!
