Eastern Region Weekly Rundown #3-4

Eastern Region Week #3

Hurricane Isabel, need I say more? All activities were cancelled

Eastern Region Week #4

As the last weekend of September came and went, Eastern Region teams and individuals garnered some impressive wins and posted some fabulous times. As always, Steven Walters of Green Run was the highlight of the Eastern Region when he won (16:27) >the Maymont Cross Country Invite in Richmond. He ran most of the race with JR Tucker sophomore Michael Chapa until the final 300m or so when he kicked in to the finish line ahead of Chapa by 4 seconds.

Maymont Cross Country Festival

Perhaps it was the hills, but most Eastern Region teams did not fare well at this course. Some individuals did quite well, but all in all the teams failed to really make an impression that will linger in the minds of teams up till the state meet.

Perhaps Eastern Region teams will make an impression when Virginia travels to our backyard to run in the William and Mary Invitational.

A Race Boys-As mentioned above, Steven Walters won this race with the fastest time of the day and with his second fastest of the year. Cox (Beach District) was the highest place Eastern Region team (9th, 227 pts.) with their top finisher placing 19th. The team's 97 second 1-5 spread was not particularly impressive and the team has work to do if they wish to represent themselves as the Eastern Region Champions at the State Meet on Nov. 8. Maury (Eastern District) was 17th with 448 and was led by Erik Odom (19:40, 66th).

B Race Boys-Jason Myers won this race in 17:51, (in the A Race he would have placed 12th) and also led his Kellam Knights (Beach District) to the B Race boys title with 91 points. Mitch Cooper of Kellam (18:24, 4th) and Robby Stoots of Cox (18:25, 5th) also placed in the top 15. Kellam had a 2:28 1-5 spread. P> Open Race Boys-Landstown easily won this race seeing as how they were the only complete team, but they had a 3:10 1-5 spread. Jon Bunker placed second with an 18:08 clocking.

A Race Girls-Natalie Sherbak (20:23, 6th) led Kellam (Beach District) to 5th place with 138 points. Kellam's 1-5 spread was a 3:23, which almost allowed rival Beach District foe Cox to move in. Cox placed 6th with 141 points. This matchup was a little bit closer than most would have thought at the beginning of the year. In fact, if the Kellam v Cox had been a dual meet the teams would have tied at an even 28. Maury (Eastern District) placed 11th with 312 points.

B Race Girls-Landstown took 10th place with 248 points and was led by Monica Pendergast (23:00, 12th)

Great American Cross Country Invitational

Ocean Lakes made the trip to Cary, North Carolina to run in the meet.

Boys-Liam Arocho ran Ocean Lakes' fastest time of the day and came in 412th with an 18:15 clocking. Clancy Waldron followed with a 18:36 that was good enough for 497th. Surprisingly Andrew Midland was 4th on Ocean Lakes' team with an 18:56 and a 553rd place finish. Ocean Lakes had a 1-5 spread of 59 seconds, which was the best of any Eastern Region boys team this weekend.

Girls-Kristin Lloyd (21:09, 173rd) led the Ocean Lakes girl's squad. The Dolphins top 3 of Kristin Lloyd, Heather Murdoch, (21:19, 185th) and Katie Keally (21:36, 219th) were just 27 seconds away from each other but 3 minutes ahead of the #4 and #5 runners.
