VHSL Group A State Meet Coverage

Pictured above by Scott Rigler: One of the great finishes at the VHSL Group A State Outdoor Championships was found in the boys 1600 meter run with defending state champion Nathan Brame of Radford (4:22.09) able to hold off Clarke County's Daniel Callan (4:22.23). However, Callan and teammate and third place finisher Simon Biddle-Snead (4:24.30) later came back with wins to help Clarke County to a second consecutive Group A team title as Callan took the 800 meter state title in 1:56.88 and Biddle-Snead defeated Brame in the 3200 meter run for a 9:34.16 victory. It was a special win for Biddle-Snead as he completed an amazing four years in Group A with his fourth state title in the 3200 meter run in as many tries with his first title as a freshmen. Clarke County tallied 82 points on Saturday as a decisive champion over Region A's Essex in second with 56 points.

There was another four peat at Radford University by the Buffalo Gap girls as four seniors on the squad can now say they were state champions all four years of high school. Amanda Caporelli was a key performer in the three previous state titles and certainly was in her senior state team title with a state championship in the long jump (18'1.50"), state runner-up in the high jump (5'6"), state runner-up in the 100 meter dash (12.77), and third place in the triple jump (36'7.50") as well as anchor their 4x100 meter relay to a second place finish. Buffalo Gap finished well ahead as the state team champions with 73 points.
