This will be the 34th running of the Metro meet which started in 1974 as the former City-County meet. Richard Browder, then the coach at Andrew Lewis High School in Salem, and Lloyd Woods, coach at Patrick Henry High School wanted to see who was the best runner in the entire Roanoke Valley. The first five Metros only included the local schools of the old Blue Ridge District and former Roanoke Valley District as was for boys only. As girls teams started forming, a separate race was held in 1978 at Fallon Park by then William Byrd coach Richard Thrasher. Private schools started to be invited in the early eighties as they began to have teams. In the nineties, teams were added and subtracted as districts changed and realigned. Through all of the changes the Metro meet has remained the area’s largest showcase of the best local running talent.
Coaches in your packets you have a course map. The colored flags match up with the colors on the map. First mile is yellow, second blue, and third red. The 5k course is marked with red spray paint. There is also an envelope in your packet for quick scoring and trash bag for team clean-up. Thank you for coming and good luck to your teams! We will get the awards and results to you as soon as we can after the Men’s Championship race.
