In the moments before a cross country race, Great Bridge senior Jayna McGehee pauses to place a religious medal around her neck.
In days gone by, the medal of St. Christopher rested in a drawer ever since her father, Lewis, had worn it while running for William and Mary in the 1970s.
"There's history behind it, but it also snaps me into the right mind-set," Jayna said. "I usually put that on, say my prayer and get focused."
"By wearing that medal," her father said, "she's carrying on a family tradition."
