Midlothian junior Paige Johnston and Great Bridge senior Jayna McGehee represented Virginia well in Friday night's junior girls 1000 meter race at the New Balance Collegiate Invite.
While it was no surprise with Chanelle Price of Pennsylvania dominating up front and on her own en route to a US #3 all-time performance of 2:45.76, it was a more surprising to see Virginia's defending 3A state champion in the 1000, Paige Johnston, chopping off four seconds from her season best in last year's state meet to finish second behind Price in the race with a US #2 time of 2:51.05. Johnston's time is also the third fastest in Virginia state history behind only national record holder Sarah Bowman at 2:43.20 (2005) and Katie Doswell at 2:47.21 (2005).
Meanwhile, McGehee faired well on the big stage at the Armory also by running a personal best of 2:56.15 and breaking the Great Bridge school record previously held by three-time 1600 meter state champion Kristy Tobin (2:56.30). McGehee's time ranks her #16 all-time in Virginia high school history in the event.
More to come from the Armory including race video and pictures and check back for updates on Saturday to see how Logan Collins, Joe Lorusso, and the Degfae twins fair in the junior boys 1000!
