Just before the start, the runners in the girls' 1600 meter race of the Virginia Invitational division anxiously await the gun.	Entering into the first turn, James River's Lindsay Traudt and Rebecca Ward, and Ginna Ellis of Norfolk Academy are the top three seeds in the field.

Traudt moves in front early with Ellis running right off her shoulder.	Two runners who pull away from the field very soon into the race are Ellis and Ward.

Running in third and fourth midway through the race are Traudt and Thomas Dale senior Bridget Dryer.	The next pack of runners is lead by Stonewall Jackson's Kristin Milot.

Ward makes her move to break away from Ellis, who did most of the pacesetting duties early on.	Ward finishes in a state best time of 5:13.86 as she nearly eclipses her outdoor personal best of 5:13.00 in the process.

Ellis takes an admirable runner-up finish with her time of 5:22.05.
