Joey Cuevas Athlete Profile

Joey had one heck of a meet last weekend in his school's biggest invitational of the year. The highlight of which was his VA #2 4:21 performance in the 1600. The time was not the only impressive thing but also the fact that to win this event he beat Bashir Mosavel-Lo, Randy Hahn, Austin Story, and Ryan Drew who are VA #3, #4, #11, ad #13. This race was stacked and Joey proved he was the best this past weekend.

This particular race and performance also garnered him the honors of performance of the week after he received a whopping 6,183 votes to beat out Isiah Garland for the top spot.

That was not the only good race he had this weekend though. He also anchored the Saints' 4x800 relay team to a 8:06 VA #2 victory. This actually also ranks as VA #1 for flat tracks. This also ranks them very far in front for the VISAA classification.

Joey is the perfect example of hard work paying off after years of putting in the work. He has though be consistently improving year after year. Last year he finished as the state runner-up in the 1000 in an event that is going to be very tough to win at VISAA states. If it is a great sign though, he improved significantly this cross country season opposed to years' past meaning he could be in for quite the season.

Joey is not your typical distance runner though as he has some serious foot speed having run 38.07 in the 300 indoors. That type of speed combined with his increased distance capabilities makes for a great combo that could see him winning a state championship this season.

If this past week tells us one thing though it is that Joey Cuevas is the real deal and just as much a title contender as anyone else, including Alex Lomong!
