Liberty Places First And Second In Men's and Women's Big South Indoor Track Championships

Blacksburg, Va. -- Coastal Carolina's women and Liberty's men were both crowned champions at the 2004 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Lady Chanticleers broke a string of six consecutive League titles by the Lady Flames, while Liberty's men have won all seven Big South Indoor championships. The event was held at Rector Fieldhouse on the campus of Virginia Tech.

Coastal's women took first with 175.50 points, while Liberty placed second with 125.50 points. Winthrop finished third (80), followed by UNC Asheville (60), Charleston Southern (53), Radford (53), High Point (47) and VMI (28).

Liberty's men won with 200.83 points, followed by VMI (139.66), Radford (96.50), High Point (63), Charleston Southern (47), UNC Asheville (43) and Winthrop (30).

Coastal Carolina's Anne Marie Moutsinga took Women's Outstanding Track Performer with wins in the 3,000 (9:56.23) and 5,000 (17:41.42) meter runs. Teammate Amber Campbell was named Outstanding Field Performer. The Chants' Alan Connie was named Coach of the Year.

VMI's Paulvince Obuon won Men's Outstanding Track Performer honors with wins in the 200 meters (21.42) and 400 meter dash (48.89). Teammate Garrett Brickner won the Men's Outstanding Field Performer. Liberty's Brant Tolsma and VMI's Mike Bozeman were named Co-Coaches of the Year.

On the women's side, Octavia Goode won the 60 meters with a mark of 7.57, which is a Conference and Championship record. Coastal Carolina's Chasity Johnson set a League and Championship record in the triple jump later in the meet with a leap of 12.30 meters. In the high jump, Kena Butts of Liberty also set both League marks with a jump of 1.70 meters. CCU's Campbell won the weight throw with a mark 21.96 meters, more League and Championship records.

Individually on the men's side, Winthrop's Joe Hall set a Conference record and a Conference meet in the 60 meters with a mark of 6.80, while Obuon equaled that accomplishment in the 200 meters with a time of 21.42. Also setting Conference and Championship marks were: Radford's Goran Nava (800 meters, 1:52.58), HPU's Taylor Milne (mile, 4:05.50), VMI's Garrett Brickner (high jump, 2.10 meters) and Liberty's Tyler Biggins (weight throw, 16.97 meters).

Ty Denby was named men's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Denby was joined on the men's All-Academic Team was made up of Charleston Southern's Martin Kutz, High Point's Jared Prunty, Liberty's Evan Falat, Radford's Nava, UNC Asheville's Phil Latter.

Coastal Carolina's Marilyn Testa was named women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She was joined on the women's All-Academic Team by Charleston Southern's Cheryl Ewing, High Point's Nicole Garner, Liberty's Danielle McNaney, Radford's Tricia Coughlin, UNC Asheville's Micki Logue, VMI's Nadia Wendlandt and Winthrop's Carrie Selmer.
