1A/2A State Preview: Could Maggie Walker's Streak Be Broken?

This year we are in for a show at the first VHSL State Championships of the season. On the campus of Roanoke College in Salem we are going to see some of the best athletes in the state toe the line for the 1A/2A combined state indoor championships. This meet will mark the first high school meet to ever take place on this track and just the second time high school kids have been allowed on it.

The track itself is a durable and not-too-firm Beynon rubber 200m surface. The best thing about it though is the elongated turns it has (within the rules) to have faster sprint times than a normal flat 200m track. Along with that the facility provides a scoreboard for timing integration and world-class field event platforms.

Entering the competition as the favorites for the team title are the Green Dragons of Maggie Walker. Though they are slated to win over Bruton in a landslide in the girls' competition, they will absolutely have their hands full with Auburn on the boys' side.

Where Maggie Walker relies on depth, Auburn will rely heavily on Caleb Hallinan, Nolan Harris, and Brandon Justice to bring home some serious points. If those three guys all do their parts then we are in for a meet that will come down to the final event, the 4x400.

Maggie Walker though can easily defend their streak of titles through Ryan Buscaglia. If Ryan steps up big and runs close to his all-time bests in the 1600, 1000, and potentially on the 4x800 then you can expect Maggie Walker to leave with a close victory.

Both teams can have almost no slippage in what is going to be by far the closest team battle in 1A/2A history.

Individually aside from the aforementioned, Maggie Walker's Khloe Pointer, Bruton's Clara Wincheski, and Patrick Henry's Alex Davenport will all be vying for serious points.
