It's the Herndon girls and Robinson boys with narrow leads after day one of the Concorde District Championships held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex on Friday, January 30.
After the conclusion of seven of the 15 events, the Herndon girls have 54 points with one of the highlights, a win in the 3,200 run by senior Hiruni Wijayaratne in 11:08.63.
The girls 3,200 was the top race of the evening with second through fourth place finishers Becca Kassabian of Oakton (11:14.34), Lanie Smith of Oakton (11:15.45) and Robinson's Stephanie Bray (11:16.25) also getting automatic state meet qualifying times.
Herndon also posted a win in the high jump with junior Danielle Theberge (5-2) and a second place in the long jump from senior Emily Palmer (17-1).
Westfield is a scant half point behind with their 53.5 point total and notched victories in the shot put with junior Kaylin Newman (34-7.75) and in the 55 hurdles with junior Rachel Dillon (9.34).
Robinson is certainly in the mix with 44.5 points after winning the 4x800 relay in 9:53.45 after a fine leadoff leg from senior Kelly Kavanaugh and having junior Audrey Barry winning the 55 dash for the second year in a row in a state auto qualifier of 7.39, while Oakton is fourth with 38 points on the strength of junior Alex Straton's win in the long jump (17-2) and second place finish in the 55 dash (7.43).
The Robinson boys currently sit in first place with 56 points. The Rams posted one victory by senior Fabian Bailey in the long jump (20-5.25) and also received runnerup spots from senior Joey Esposito in the shot put (46-10.5) and junior Ryan Tarpey in the 55 dash (6.69).
Chantilly is a close second with 53 points after wins from junior Chris Foley in the 3,200 run at 9:38.96 off of a slowish first 1,600 of 5:05 and from Wesley Sun in the pole vault at 14-6 with Sun also finishing third in the long jump (19-9) and second in the 55 hurdles (8.30).
Oakton sits in third with 42 points and had an individual winner with senior Luis Soriano in the shot put (48-2.75).
Centreville is fourth with 24 points after victories from Dominique Bacote in the 55 hurdles (8.20) and the 4x800 relay team of Mattson Heiner, Dan Grimm, Joey Hannah and Yazid Zouaimia in 8:25.04 while Fairfax junior David Ladd was the other event winner, in the 55 dash at 6.52.
The meet concludes Thursday, February 5 at the P.G. Complex with field events at 4:00 p.m. and the running finals beginning at 5:00 p.m.
