Region I Championships: Jamestown boys steam roll through region...state title next?

The Jamestown boys put on an impressive team performance at Thursday's Region I Indoor Track & Field Championships held at the Boo Williams Sportsplex garnering 118 points through sweeping all 3 relay races as well as having a total of five different individual regional champions. Individual winners for the Eagles include Nick Durante in the pole vault (14'0"), Greg Farrell in the 300 meter dash (36.95), Russell Hornsby in the 1000 meter run (2:37.89), Colin Mearns in the 1600 meter run (4:19.97), and Andrew Colley in the 3200 meter run (9:28.84).

The Courtland girls also looked to their relays to lead the way to another Region I title with victories in the 4x200 and 4x400 meter relays as well as a 1-2 finish in the 500 meter dash from Jaime Lott (1:19.85) and Nya Johnson (1:21.92) . Courtland's time in the 4x400 meter relay of 4:09.88 is the fastest performance so far in Group AA this season. The Battlefield District champions finished26 points ahead of runner-up Lafayette (60 pts) with a team score of 86 points.

Lafayette was led by their talented freshmen distance runner Heidi Peterson, who crossed the line with first place finishes in both the 1600 (5:21.46) and 1000 (3:07.86) meter races.

The top individual double winners in the girls' meet though belonged to defending AA state track champions Sherelle White of York and Krystal Parrish of Park View. White,defending champion in the 55 meter dash, won the short sprint event as expected in a 7.26 clocking in the finals and later posted a personal best time of 41.61 in the 300 meter dash in a close win against top seed Ruby Blackwell of Courtland (41.63).

Parrish, the Group AA state champion last spring in the long jump and triple jump, was actually competing in her first indoor meet ever at the regional meet and quickly sprung to marks which should assert herself as one of the favorites in both events next weeek at the Group AA Indoor State Championships with a AA leading mark of18'3.50" in the long jump and solid winning mark as well in the triple jump of 36'8.50".

Cornell Jones of Smithfield also produced the #1 mark in the long jump for Group AA at Boo Williams as the senior improved four inches from his previous season best with a leap of 22'11.25" to win the regional title.

While several girls won multiple regional titles, Lafayette's D'Angelo Scales was the only male athlete to finish first in a pair of events as Scales finished as seeded in both the triple jump (44'0") and 55 meter hurdles (7.87).

The Chancellor boys were distance runner-ups to Jamestown in the team scoring with 66 points as their top finishers included regional champions Roderick Spruel in the 55 meter dash (6.53), Alex Hinton in the 500 meter dash (1:08.73), and Dennis Wagner in the shot put (48'2.50").
