UR Track And Field Opens Outdoor Season With Top Perfomances

Three Spiders earn gold medals

Richmond, Va. - Senior Tim Caramore (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and junior Ashley Bell (Glenn Allen, Va.) both took a gold medal as the University of Richmond men's and women's track and field teams competed in the VCU Ram Invitational at Sports Backers Stadium, yesterday.

Caramore won the 5000M run in a time of 14:48.92 to lead the Spiders, while sophomore John Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) finished second in the 3000M run at 8:52.98.

Fourth-place performances were turned in by senior Kevin Rhue (Virginia Beech, Va.), 800M, 1:58.49; Rusty Burrell (Lawton, Okla.), high jump, 5'10.75 and the 4x800 team (8:00.18).

Bell led the women's team with three top-three finishes. Claiming first in the 100M hurdles (14:41), she placed second in the triple jump (37-09.50) and third in the long jump (18-10.75).

Senior Diane Schreiber (Johnsonburg, Pa.) also finished in the top-three on three occasions. In the hammer she threw 150-09M for second, 123-11M for third-place in the discus and third in the javelin with 127.01M.

Freshman Beth Crocus (Bethlehem, Pa.) and senior Julee Wilson (Chester Springs, Pa.) both earned two top-five performances. Crocus placed first in the javelin (141-06) and fifth in the hammer (143-02), while Wilson took second (19-05.50) in the long jump and fifth in the 200M dash in 25.06.

Other top-three performances were turned in by Caitlin Smyth (Upper Saddle River, N.J.), second in the 1500M run (4:43.41); Amanda Russell (North Bay, Ontario), second in the 5000M run (17:51.92); Rachel Brushett (Silver Springs, Md.), second in the high jump (5'02.25); Lindsey Smith (Pottsville, Pa.), second in the javelin (132-03); Leslie Gleue (Cape Canaveral, Fla.), second in the discus (126-06); the 4x800 squad, second (9:44.33) and Emily Ward (Woodbury, N.J.), third in the 5000M run (17:53.31).

The Spiders travel to Raleigh, N.C. on Friday, March 26th and Saturday, March 27th
