Freshman Jessica Young and senior John Ciccarelli both had strong performances at the Iowa State Last-Chance Meet on Saturday, including Young smashing her own school record in the 400-meter dash with an NCAA Championship qualifying time. Young placed third in her heat and fifth overall against some of the top 400-meter runners in the nation. Her time of 54.19 seconds smashed her own school record and qualified her for the NCAA Championships. Young will find out on Tuesday if her mark is good enough to place her in the 17 qualifiers for the NCAA Championships to be held next weekend at the University of Arkansas.
Legendary track & field coach and University of Richmond Hall Of Fame member, Fred Hardy passed away Friday afternoon at the Windsor Nursing Home in Richmond at the age of 89. Hardy coached track & field and cross country for 35 years (1950-1985) at the University of Richmond and established an elite program that succeeded on the collegiate and international level. He was known by his student-athletes as a great teacher that elevated every athlete beyond their initial potential.
In its last meet before the Atlantic 10 Championship, the University of Richmond men\'s and women\'s cross country teams competed at the Arkansas Chili Pepper Festival on Saturday. Facing several of the top teams in the nation, the Richmond women\'s team finished 14th in the 33-team field, while the men\'s team took 19th out 29 teams. Richmond senior John Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) finished in 26th out of 241 collegiate runners, completing the 10K in a time of 30:01.9. On the women\'s side, freshman Katie Van Horn (Glendora, N.J.) took 44th out of 299 runners, finishing the 6K in 22:07.2.

Van Horn crossed the finish line in 21:35.8 to finish with the same time as Richmond junior Amanda Russell (North Bay, Ontario). This is Van Horn\'s second Altantic 10 Rookie of the Week honor.

Richmond junior Amanda Russell (North Bay, Ontario) defended her Spider Alumni Open title, finishing first in 11:06.79 in the women\'s two-mile race, while Spider senior John Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.) won the men\'s 5K in 15:11.3.
The Richmond track and field squad finished its season with a fourth and fifth place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Richmond, Va. The Spiders, who hosted the event at Sports Backers Stadium, placed a total of 13 individuals on the All-Conference first and second teams including nine individual performances and a relay team.
Sophomore Amanda Russell ran a 17:07.94 to win the women\'s 5000 meter race Friday at the First Annual Fred Hardy Invitational at the Fred Hardy Track and Field facility on the campus of the University of Richmond. The Spider women garnered seven Top-10 finishes on the day, while sophomore Rusty Burrell led the men with a third-place finish in the high jump with a height of 6-02.75.
The University of Richmond track and field team will host the First Annual Fred Hardy Invitational Friday-Saturday, March 25-26, at the Fred Hardy Track and Field Facility at First Market Stadium on the Richmond campus. The Spiders, who will compete as the event hosts, will welcome 10 teams to the event including Pittsburgh, Virginia, VCU, William & Mary, James Madison, Concord, George Washington, Shippensburg and West Chester. The field will also include several unattached athletes, most notably Samuel Okantey who competed in the triple jump at the 2000 Olympiad in Sydney, Australia. Okantey holds a personal best of 54-11.50 in the event.

University of Richmond Director of Track and Field, Lori Taylor, announced the signing of Carly Hess who will join the Spiders in the 2005-06 season. The senior at Warwick High School in Lititz, Pa., has excelled in the short spints and long jump events throughout her prep career. She recorded personal bests in the long jump of 12.2 (Solanco Invitational) and 18-05.75 (PIAA State Championships) last season. The All-State long jumper enters her senior campaign as one of the premiere jumpers in the state of Pennsylvania.

Caitlin Chock (Granite Bay High School-Granite Bay, CA) who defended her California Cross Country title on November 29th and is a 2002 Foot Locker National Finalist, Kate Merrill (Jordan High School-Durham, NC) who defended her state championship title in North Carolina this fall and is also a 2002 Foot Locker National Finalist, Johanna McKnight (John Curtis High School, LA) the 2003 Louisiana State 200M Champion and Patricia Graves (Jamestown High School-Jamestown, NY) who is a shot put and discus specialist.
Whether it\'s cross country or track season, more times than not Granite Bay High standout Caitlin Chock seems to get a jump on the competition. She did it again last week, only this time it was with her lungs, not her legs. Chock announced Wednesday that she has verbally committed to attend the University of Richmond (VA) on a cross-country scholarship next fall.
The University of Richmond men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Orlando, Florida for the prestigious Walt Disney World Classic this weekend. The meet brought together 32 college teams on Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex from as far away as Canada. The Spiders were ready for the competition. The women's team continued to be impressive, easily defeating the second place University of Florida Gators with a score of 53 to 75. The men finished second overall in the large field to the University of Windsor (Canada), the top ranked collegiate team in Canada. The men easily outdistanced third place University of Miami (FL) who scored 152 points.
The University of Richmond men's and women's cross country teams both won the first annual Ukrop's Maymont Invitational held today. The women's team scored a perfect 15 points. Their nearest competition was Virginia Commonwealth University in 2nd place with 94 points. The Rams were followed in 3rd by Marshall University (WV) with 107 points rounding out the top 3 teams. On the men's side the Spiders scored 31 points (7 athletes in the top 12 over-all) to easily outdistance 2nd place Radford University with 81 points.
