The defending Group AA State champion in the 500 and 800, Steve Carlson started off in the right track as he won the 500 at Fork Union in a time of 1:08.6 as it only took him one race to get his state qualifier this season.
The boys' 1000 saw some fast times posted by juniors Kippy Keino of Fork Union and Daniel Kane of Louisa. Keino led with breathing room from the start and was never seriously challenged by Kane en route to his time of 2:37.8. Nonetheless, Kane still ran an impressive time with his 2:40.7 clocking.
Keino's independent school rival, Brian Doherty of Roanoke Catholic lapped the entire field to win the 3200 meter race in a time of 9:48.7 which is an excellent early season time.
Atlee's Nick Robinson had a stellar meet as he was a double winner in the 55 hurdles (8.06) and long jump (21'01.75").
The girl's jumping events were heavily contested between Patrick Edward Country's Octavia Best and Western Albemarle's Michelle Gardner. The two outstanding horizontal leapers both earned a win apeice as Best won the long jump (17'1") and Garnder won the triple jump (35'11"). Best also was a victor in the 55 meter hurdles (9.18).
Caroline senior Courtney Green was dominating in the sprints as she won both the 55 meter (7.53) and 300 meter (43.33) races.
