Britton Wilson and Kori Carter may be graduating but there are still going to be some huge names in the Class 5 sprints. One of them is Makhia Jarrett, a junior from Salem (Va Beach) who was the runner-up in both the 55 and 300 meter dashes at indoor states.
Makhia owns personal bests of 7.01 and 39.17 indoors and 11.84 and 24.00 outdoors. If you're wondering why you haven't heard of her yet with those PR's it is because she's only been in VA for a year.
She competed for Enloe High School (NC) for her freshman and sophomore years and just this year moved to VA. Already she is making a name for herself and improving by leaps and bounds.
This outdoor season will be the true test and exciting too.
The best gauge for what to expect comes from her state meet performance and her 24.18 PR and victory at New Balance Nationals (Emerging Elite Division). That shows she is in the best shape of her life and potentially ready to pull off the impossible and takedown Wilson or Carter in the 200.
If her past is any indication she is capable of running close to 23.5 and 11.6 this season. Those times will not only put her in contention for a state title but also potentially allow her to become an All-American as well.
Learn the name, remember the name and get ready for a huge outdoor season from Makhia Jarrett.
