Gar-Field boys and girls start out flying out of the gates

LEXINGTON, VA - The Gar-Field boys and girls track teams started out their 2001-2002 indoor track season flying out the gates with both teams winning team titles at the Walt Cormack Relays at Virginia Military Institute's indoor track facility.

Tiffany Evans led the way for the Gar-Field girls' squad as she won the shot put with a throw of 44'04.50". The relays were also strong for Coach Jeff Custer's squad. The Lady Indians won the 4x400 (4:19.09) and also finished second in the 4x200 (1:54.65) and sprint medley (4:37.24) to help give Gar-Field the win with 44 points. The Gar-Field girls were closely challenged though by T.W. Andrews from North Carolina who took runner up honors with 42 points.

The girls' mile race was a good one as North Stafford senior Kristyn Shiring won in a time of 5:26.95 with Stonewall Jackson's Kristen Milot taking a close second in a time of 5:29.05.

Briana Smith of Manchester proved why she is one of the best hurdlers in the state as she blew away the field in the 55 meter hurdles with her time of 8.56.

Another athlete, who is one of the best in the state in her event, Kira Barcus started her year off nicely by winning the pole vault as she reached 10'00.00".

The Gar-Field boys' victory wasn't nearly as close as the girls was as they won with 49.5 points with Atlee taking a distance second with 35 points.

Derek Liggins was the Indians sole event winner as he took the long jump with a leap of 21'11.00".

Losing the state title to Maggie Walker by a slim margin at the state cross country meet in November was a heartbreaking blow to the Midlothian squad. They helped alleviate that pain themselves by beating Maggie Walker in the 4x800 at the Walt Cormack Relays with a time of 8:24.13.

University of Virginia bound John Piersol of Maggie ran a stellar race to win the mile run in a time of 4:30.68.

Quick times were posted in the 55 meter dash and hurdles as Rolland Hillard of Osbourn Park won the dash in 6.62 and Terry Thornton of Petersburg won the hurdles in 7.87.

There were also some noteworthy performances in the field events. Dinwiddie's Wayne Odom hit 13'00.00" to win the pole vault and Manchester's William Collins broke the 50 feet mark with his throw of 51'02.50" to win the shot put.
