William & Mary Track and Field Continues Competition at IC4As

W&M in Third

NEW HAVEN, CT - 2004 CAA Champion William and Mary men's track and field continued to compete Saturday at the IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships. After Saturday's action the Tribe sits in third place with 18 points as Manhattan has jumped out to a sizable lead, taking first with 37 points. Friday-leader Iona dropped to second with 24 points. Points are awarded to the top-eight finishers in each event, who receive All-East honors. The meet, hosted by Yale, attracts a large field of teams from across the Eastern U. S. and represents the last opportunity for athletes to set NCAA qualification marks.

Highlighting the day for the College was the performance of its 4x800m relay team of freshman Matt Warco (McMurray, PA), junior Bill Tarantino (Woodbridge, VA), sophomore Matt Wolak (Richmond, VA) and senior Scott Ickes (Rochester, NY) as the four won their heat with a season-fast time to automatically qualify for Sunday's finals of the event. The quartet clocked a 7:35.38 in Saturday's preliminary action, a blistering six seconds faster than its previous best this season.

W&M had a strong Friday evening with one champion and three All-East performers. Freshman Keith Bechtol (Alexandria, VA) captured the IC4A title in the 10,000m to lead the trio as sophomore Matt Keally (Virginia Beach, VA) claimed third in the race and sophomore Jason Schoener (Grand Blanc, MI) rounded out the Tribe All-East performers by finishing seventh in the event.

The IC4As conclude Sunday.
