Three All-East Performances Highlight Final Day of William & Mary Men

Smith, Huntzinger, 4x800m Relay All-East

NEW HAVEN, CT - Junior Andy Smith (Raleigh, NC), freshman Steve Huntzinger (Fairfax, VA) and the Tribe's 4x800m relay squad of freshman Matt Warco (McMurray, PA), junior Bill Tarantino (Woodbridge, VA), sophomore Matt Wolak (Richmond, VA) and senior Scott Ickes (Rochester, NY) all earned All-East honors as 2004 CAA Champion William and Mary men's track and field competed on the final day of the IC4A Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The College ended the IC4As in 13th with 25 points as Army won the IC4A team title with 50 points, just edging runner-up Rutgers, which tallied 48.75 points. Points were awarded to the top-eight finishers in each event, who received All-East honors. The meet, hosted by Yale, attracted a large field of over 50 teams from across the Eastern U. S. and represented the last opportunity for athletes to set NCAA qualification marks.

Smith led the squad Sunday with his sixth-place, All-East effort in the javelin. Throwing for 204'4" Smith again qualified for the upcoming NCAA East Regional with his performance. In the shot, Huntzinger parlayed his second-best throw of the season, 53'3", into his first career All-East honor, impressing with a seventh in his first appearance at the IC4As.

The College's 4x800m relay squad of Warco, Tarantino, Wolak and Ickes also orchestrated a strong performance, with two athletes setting personal records as the quartet clocked a season fast 7:34.45 to capture All-East honors in seventh place. Tarantino and Ickes both raced to career best times, timing 1:54.1 and 1:53.8 segments, respectively, while Warco ran a 1:54.7 and Wolak paced a strong 1:51.8.

With six All-East performances today, W&M ended the IC4As earning nine All-East designations, out of only 13 athletes who competed. as freshman Keith Bechtol (Alexandria, VA), sophomore Matt Keally (Virginia Beach, VA) and sophomore Jason Schoener (Grand Blanc, MI) all merited the honor on Friday. Bechtol earned the honor by capturing the IC4A championship in the 10,000m with the fastest time in the distance set by a U.S. junior, 29:58.13

Qualified athletes with have two weeks to prepare for the NCAA East Regional Championships which will be hosted by Florida in Gainesville, FL May 28-29.
