University of Richmond Cross Country Starts Season In Richmond

UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - Tall grass and rain has forced University of Richmond officials to move the location of Saturday's Spider Cross Country Alumni Open, the first cross country meet of the 2004 season, to St. Catherine's Fields in Richmond.

Former Spider runners and VCU's cross country team will join Richmond's cross country team on Sept. 4 as the men's 5K race gets underway at 9:30 a.m. The women's two mile race will follow at 10 a.m.

Junior Nicole Kurtain will lead the Richmond women this weekend after garnering All-Atlantic 10 first team honors in the 2003. The Hamilton, N.J., native placed fourth at the A-10 Championships last season with a time of 18:25.80. Another Spider women's runner that will brave the course is sophomore Caitlin Smyth. Smyth, an Upper Saddle River, N.J., native, was the top freshman in last season's 2003 A-10 Championships with an overall finish of fifth (18:31.40).

The Richmond men will be led by senior Pat Barkhuff and junior John Ciccarelli. Barkhuff, a native of Groton, Mass., recorded a 10K time of 32:32.10 at the NCAA Southeast Regional last season. Ciccarelli (South Bury, Conn.), a three-time A-10 Rookie of the Week last season, placed 14th at the Conference Championships with a time of 26:01.80.
