W&L Cross Country Competes in NYU Invite

NEW YORK, N.Y. -- The Washington and Lee men's and women's cross country teams were in action on Saturday as they competed in the New York University Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. The W&L men finished second of 28 teams, while the women finished fifth of 22 teams.

Leading the way for the men's team, which was bested only by Wesleyan University, was junior Nathan Johnson (Lexington, Va./Rockbridge County) who placed fourth out of 242 runners with a time of 27:15. Freshman Tom Brower (Syracuse, N.Y./Christian Brothers Academy) finished 14th with a time of 27:50, while fellow classmate Alex Mahoney (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier Academy) crossed the tape in 18th place (27:58).

On the women's side, freshman Lindsay Erickson (Silver Spring, Md./Stone Ridge) was the pace-setter, finishing fifth out of 240 runners with a time of 20:04. Sophomore Tippins Stone (Nashville, Tenn./Harpeth Hall) placed 14th overall (20:44), while junior Betsy Frayer (Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) finished 23rd with a time of 21:00.

Washington and Lee returns to action on Sat. Oct. 2, when it hosts the Generals' Invitational at 10:00 am.
