It took the Mills Godwin boys three decades, but they finally claimed their first Colonial District Indoor title on Saturday behind Grant Pollock leading a deep distance corps. Pollock won individual titles in the 1000 and 3200 on Saturday after anchoring the first place 4x800 meter relay on Friday. The 3200 meter run sealed the runaway win for the Eagles as Pollock was one of five scorers among the top 7 for his team.
Only seven points separated the top three finishing teams in the girls' standings with Patrick Henry as the 2010 champions with 106 points. John Marshall dominated many of the sprint races including girls 55 and 300 meter dash winner Mary Allen. Allen won the 55 meter dash in an ancitipated match-up between two of the Central Region's best short sprinters in Allen (7.25) and Patrick Henry's Shyra Moulton (7.27).
The Deep Run girls had been the most dominant team in the district for the past few years, but graduation losses were too much for them to overcome and become champions again in 2010. Their top two distance runners in Courtney Dobbs and Madalyn Nuckols had stellar district meets as both ran on Friday's first place 4x800 meter relay and then came back to race well in two individual races apiece. Both posted times on the Ashe Center's 145 meter spikeless surface which would stand up well on a faster 200 meter track as Dobbs won the 1600 (5:13.89) and 1000 (3:09.15), while Nuckols follwed up her runner-up 1600 finish (5:16.47) to Dobbs with a decisive victory in the 3200 (5:16.47).
