CNU Men & Women Win USA South Championship

GREENSBORO, NC - Both of Christopher Newport\'s men\'s and women\'s cross country teams qualified for the NCAA South/Southeast Regional Saturday afternoon by winning the USA South Championship meet.

On the women\'s side, CNU placed first with 15 points, Greensboro was second with 55 and Averett third with 69.

The Lady Captains captured six of the top seven spots highlighted by Emily Low\'s first place performance in the 6K run with a time of 24:48. Ashley Ezell finished second with a time of 26:01, Megan Forgarty was third with a time of 26:18, Elizabeth Browning placed fifth with a time of 27:43, Crystal Pruitt finished sixth in 28:21 and Grace Lovegrove was seventh with a time of 28:49.

All six runners earned USA South All-Meet honors.

On the men\'s side, CNU finished first with a score of 20, Ferrum and Greensboro tied for second with 71 and Methodist placed fourth with 78.

The Captains captured spots two through eight and the tenth spot. Cary Chaffee placed second in the 8K run with a time of 27:31, Jim Highsmith was third with a 28:00, David Baer was fourth with a time of 28:09, Jay Wyss was fifth with a 28:12, Tim Scott placed sixth with a time of 28:21, Nate Wallace was seventh with a 28:36, Daniel Swale finished eighth with a time of 28:40 and Jason Berry was 10th with a time of 28:58.

Chaffee, Highsmith, Baer, Wyss, Scott and Wallace all earned USA South All-Meet honors.

Both teams will be back in action on Saturday, November 13 at the NCAA South/Southeast Regional in Atlanta, GA.
