Hokies Break Four School Indoor Records and Qualify Four to NCAA\\\'s

Tech throwers and vaulters have success after first indoor meet of the season

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Virginia Tech track & field teams began the 2004-05 indoor season with four Hokies breaking school records and four athletes qualifying for the NCAA Championships at the Clemson Opener on Friday and the VMI Invitational today.

At the Clemson Opener, Spyridon Jullien (Jr., Athens, Greece) won the men\'s weight throw competition with an NCAA automatic mark of 71\'11\". He also broke his own school record and set a new personal best and Clemson indoor track & field facility record in the throw.

Ryan Norwood (Sr., Cheyenne, Wyo.) finished second in the men\'s shot put with his NCAA qualifying mark of 59\'8.25\". With his mark, Norwood reclaimed the indoor school record from teammate Brian MacPhee.

Sven Hahn (Jr., Stuttgart, Germany) also qualified for the NCAA Championships in his first collegiate competition throwing the shot 58\'8.75\" for a third place finish behind Norwood.

Stephen Huntzinger (So., Fairfax, Va.) recorded a personal best mark in the shot put with 55\'3.75. He took sixth place and teammate William Collins (Jr., Chesterfield, Va.) was eighth with 51\'3.75\".

Kristen Callan (So., Monroe, N.Y.) finished eighth in the women\'s weight throw with an NCAA provisional mark of 60\'10.75\". She also broke her own indoor record.

Other notable performance from the meet include, Idikoro Eradiri (So., Ashburn, Va.) posted a personal best mark in the men\'s triple jump with 49\'1.50\" while Jason Fludd (Sr., Stafford, Va.) finished fifth in the event.

Britini Spruill (Fr., Hampton, Va.) was seventh out of 26 competitors in the women\'s long jump with 18\'.50\" and then took eighth out of 22 runners in the women\'s 200m with a time of 25.94.

The women\'s 4x400m relay consisting of Marie Giles (Sr., Hampton, Va.), Victoria Green (Jr., Chesapeake, Va.), Jackie Nicholson (Sr., Clayton, N.J.) and Spruill finished in 3:54.75 and took second out of 13 teams.

Victor Davis (Jr., Richmond, Va.), Anthony Jenkins (Sr., Baltimore, Md.) Matt Renninger (Jr., Barto, Va.) and Fludd ran on Tech\'s men\'s 4x400m relay team that finished fourth out of 15 teams with a time of 3:22.78.

Today, six Hokie vaulters competed in the VMI Invitational and swept first-place in the men\'s and women\'s competitions.

Erin Mahony (So., Virginia Beach, Va.) won the women\'s pole vault event with a new personal best and Virginia Tech indoor record of 11\'9.75\". Abby McGrath (So., Burke, Va.) came in second with 11\'3.75\" and Kim Johnson was sixth.

On the men\'s side, Tech took 1-2-3. Brian Mondschein (Jr., Hummelstown, Pa.) won the men\'s pole vault with a jump of 16\'4.75\", Daniel Gore (Jr., Leonardtown, Md.) followed in second place and Adam Bingaman (So., New Berlinville, Pa.) was third. Joe Samaniuk (So., Rexford, N.Y.) placed fifth in the event.
