Cavaliers Fare Well at National Open

Kathryn Pettine moves to #2 all-time at UVa, number of personal bests reached

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA -- Virginia\'s Kathryn Pettine moved up to the #2 position all-time in school history when she cleared 11\' 9.75\" in the pole vault on her first attempt, setting a new personal best by a half-a-foot. She finished sixth overall in the meet, as just one of a handful of Cavaliers who hit personal best marks in the National Open held at Penn State this weekend (Jan. 28-29). A pair of male distance runners, Alex Tatu and Will Christian, also both ran personal records with Tatu running a 4:06.64 in the mile and moving him into the top-10 all-time in the mile in UVa history. Tatu placed fifth at the meet.

Christian\'s 8:17.74 was also a personal best and gave him eighth place at the meet. David Sullivan took home runner-up honors as he cleared 16\' 8.75\" on his first attempt, hitting a season-high for the Cavaliers. The distance medley team also took home runner-up honors as Tatu led off for Virginia, with Kellen Blassingame, Zach Davis, and Walt Kingsbery completing the quartet. Blassingame\'s 48.48 in the 400 was a season best for Virginia and was good enough for eighth at the meet. Scott Robinson\'s 8.25 in the 60m hurdles is a personal best for him as well as a season best for the Hoos. Matt Gutridge also hit a personal best as well as a UVa season best with his 14:39.10 in the 5K today.

Rachel Marks took home the bronze in the high jump with her 5\' 6\", while Tomika Ferguson and Katie Tershel just missed medaling in the triple jump, taking fourth and fifth places, respectively. Cheryl Carr\'s 17:17.90 just missed a personal best for her but was good enough for fifth. Full results below.
