Spyridon Jullien Wins ACC Men\'s Weight Throw Title

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Spyridon Jullien became Virginia Tech\'s first ACC individual champion on the first day of the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championships. The championships are held on Dick Taylor Track in Eddie Smith Field House on the campus of North Carolina.

Jullien, a junior from Athens, Greece, picked up 10 team points when he won the men\'s 35 lb. weight throw event with his fifth NCAA automatic qualifying mark of 75\'9.50\" (23.10m).

His mark shattered the previous ACC Indoor Championship meet record by almost six feet, which was 68\'3.75\" (20.82) set by Isaiah Oglesby (NC State) in 2001. He also broke his own Eddie Smith Field House record which he set on Feb. 5 with 71\'0.50\" (21.65m).

Jullien, a three-time All-American and two-time BIG EAST weight throw champion, already holds Tech\'s school and Rector Field House records with his PR (personal record) mark of 76\'. He even holds Clemson\'s track and field facility record when he set it on Dec. 3.

Jullien remains the No. 1 men\'s weight throw athlete in the NCAA division I according to Trackshark.com.

William Collins (Jr., Chesterfield, Va.) finished seventh in the 12 thrower-field of the weight throw event with his mark of 54\'6.50\" (16.62m). Collins earned two team points for the Hokies.

In the women\'s 20 lb. weight throw, Tamara Burns (Jr, Elm Creek, Neb.) placed third and earned six team points with her second NCAA automatic qualifying mark of the season (67\"6\"; 20.57m). Her throw was about a foot shy of her personal best of 68\'7.25\" (20.91m).

Burns\' teammate Kristen Callan (So., Monroe, N.Y.) set a PR (personal best) in the event with her NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 63\'7.50\" (19.39m) for fourth place and five team points.

Laura Gerraughty (North Carolina) won her second ACC weight throw title with her NCAA automatic throw of 7\'3.75\" (21.43). Gerraughty was a 2004 Olympian in the shot put. Kimberli Barrett (Miami) came in second while Della Clark (Clemson) took third.

The women\'s pentathalon also competed today. Gunild Kreb (Jr., Winterbach, Germany) earned five team points for her fourth place finish in the pentathalon with 3,670 points. Saskia Triesscheijn (Jr., Berlin, Germany) took ninth place with 3,124 points while Katie Campbell (Jr., Bristol, Va.) had 3,017 points for 12th place.

After the first day of the ACC indoor championships, Tech\'s No. 22 men\'s team is in first place with 12 points while the Hokie women are second with 16 points.

The action resumes tomorrow with the men\'s 60-meter hurdles at noon. Friday\'s competition ends with the men\'s and women\'s distance medley relays at 6:30 p.m.
