Spider Track Finish Third And Sixth At Atlantic 10 Indoor Championships

Senior Ashley Bell earns Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete with three individual wins.

KINGSTON, R.I. - Richmond\'s senior Ashley Bell earned the Atlantic 10 Most Outstanding Female Field Athlete after winning three events and led the Spider women to a third-place finish. Junior John Ciccarelli was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team and paced the men to a sixth-place finish Saturday, Feb. 19, at the Atlantic 10 Indoor Track Championships in Kingston, R.I.

Bell opened her day by breaking the Spider record in the 55 meter during the prelim race. Her time of 7.12 ranked second overall and placed her in the finals where she ran a 7.13 to finish second. The Glen Allen, Va., native later broke the Richmond 200 meter record with a first-place time of 25.17.

Junior Danielle Eaton put her name on the All-Conference team with a season-best time of 2:15.19 in the 800 meter. The Malvern, Pa., native won the event by a narrow margin of eight-tenths of a second.

Sophomore Amanda Russell garnered a Top-3 finish in the 5000 meter with a time of 17:17.40. Bell went back to work in the 55 meter hurdles with a Richmond record time of 8.11. She qualified second after prelims, but finished the final in third place.

The Spiders\' 3200 meter relay captured a third-place finish with a time of 9:24.07. Sophomore Nicole Erby, juniors Amy Thesing, Eaton and Diana Morse ran the event for the first time this season for Richmond.

In the field events Bell captured two crowns on her way to the All-Conference team. Her first was in the long jump with a distance of 18-07.00 and the other in the triple jump (38-08.25). Sophomore Lindsey Smith placed third in the shot put event with a season-best toss of 41-07.25. Sophomore Beth Crocus took home another third-place finish for the Spider throwers with a season-best distance of 50-11.00 in the weight throw.

Junior Ryan Mace helped get the men started with a season-best time of 6.45 in the 55 meter. The McKinney, Texas, native placed fourth in the finals after qualifying sixth.

Freshman Ryan Jobes garnered a Top-5 finish in the 500 meter with a 1:06.69. Prior to the meet Jobes was ranked 10th overall in the Atlantic 10. Another freshman, Jonathan Molz, picked up a second-place finish with a season-best time of 2:30.77 in the 1000 meters.

Ciccarelli earned a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-Conference squad with a first-place time of 8:32.03 in the 3000 meters. Sophomore Rusty Burrell captured fourth place in the high jump with a height of 6-03.25.

Senior Joe Mallory broke his own newly set school record in the triple jump with a distance of 47-04.50. Mallory, who finished second in the event, had set the previous best of 47-03.00 Feb. 5 in Lynchburg, Va.
