Without Any Hurdles, Phillips Shows He\'s Just as Fast

Olympic hurdle wins 60-meter dash at Collegiate Open Invitational

The George Mason men\'s and women\'s track and field teams hosted the George Mason Collegiate Open Invitational on Saturday and Olympian Richard Phillips had a chance to show his speed without any hurdles in his path. The Olympic semifinalist in the 110-meter hurdles and indoor All-American in the 60-meter hurdles and 110-meter hurdles got to run the 60-meter dash and he showed the whether he\'s got obstacles in his path or not, he is just plain fast.

Phillips won the 60-meter dash, finishing first in a time of 6.88 seconds, good enough to qualify for the IC4A Championships. Phillips is already running the 60-meter hurdles and 200-meter dash at the IC4A.

Phillips wasn\'t the only member of the men\'s track team to win an event on Saturday. Ricardo Melbourne won the 60-meter hurdles in 7.81 seconds while teammate Brian Hay was sixth in 8.10 seconds. Hay joined Phillips and Melbourne with a qualifying time for the IC4A. The 4X400-meter relay team of Ricardo Cunningham, Lennarz MacGreor, Phillips and Melbourne finished in 3:17.89, which also was a qualifying time. Quentin Matthews, Jonathan Martin and Wayne Wright finished first through third, respectively in the high jump while Marc Kellman and Ryan McCoy were first and second, respectively, in the triple jump.

The women\'s team had a few champions as well. Alycia Williams continued her strong running this indoor season by taking first in the 200-meters with a time of 24.99 seconds. Paula Bailey was fourth in the event with a time of 25.46. Sheena Davidson won the 400-meters with a time of 55.62 and Ryann Holmes was second in the 500-meters, with a time of 1:20.98. Fiana York won the 1,000-meters in 2:57.41 and Kathy Williams was third in the pentathlon, with 3,023 points.

The 4X400-meter relay team of Alycia Williams, Kathy Williams, Davidson and Bailey was second in 3:54.58 and the Distance Medley Relay team of Holmes, Shannon Runge, Melissa Ferry and York were second in 12:36.17.

The Patriots are in action again on Sunday when they compete in the George Mason Winter Open Invitational.
