Tribe Earns Five ECAC Bids
RALEIGH, NC - Junior Kristyn Shiring (Stafford, VA) raced to an NCAA Provisional qualification as four-time defending CAA Champion William and Mary women's track and field competed Friday evening at N. C. State's Raleigh Relays. One of the premier meets on the East Coast, the Raleigh Relays features over 50 teams, including programs out of the ACC, Big East, C-USA and CAA. In a strong performance for the Green and Gold, the Tribe raced to five ECAC qualifications as well.Shiring blistered the track with a 34:46.00 to win the seeded 10,000m, running under the NCAA Provisional and ECAC standard. Sophomore Julia Cathcart (Starkville, MS) just missed a provisional mark by a little of over a second by timing a 35:16.69 to break the ECAC barrier and claim third in the race. Senior Becca Velarde (Albuquerque, NM) clocked a personal record 37:01.90 for ninth, qualifying for ECACs, while sophomore Christ Dannenberg (Reston, VA) also broke the ECAC standard with her career fast effort of 37:27.41. In the 5,000m, sophomore Meghan Bishop earned an ECAC qualification by clocking a 17:12.84 while freshman Kaitlin Hurley (Portland, OR) missed an ECAC bid by just three seconds with a 17:35.02.
The Raleigh Relays conclude Saturday. Also this weekend, W&M is competing at Richmond's Fred Hardy Invitational; a release about the meet will follow as results become available.
