Matthews Posts NCAA Regional Qualifying High Jump Mark at Baldy Castillo Invitational

Several IC4A marks are also set at the event.

TEMPE, Ariz. - Senior Quentin Matthews (Chesapeake, Va./Deep Creek) qualified for the NCAA Regionals in the high jump, while four other events had athletes post qualifying marks for the IC4A Championships as the George Mason men\'s track and field team completed its first outdoor meet of the season. The Patriots finished action Saturday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational, held at Joe Selleh Track at Sun Angel Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.

Matthews wasted no time in becoming the first Patriot to advance to the NCAA Regionals after placing second overall in the high jump with a leap of 2.10m, which is the minimum qualifying height. Minnesota\'s Bryant Howe won the event with a leap of 2.15m.

Earning qualifying times for the IC4A Championships were the members of Mason\'s 4x100m relay team of freshman Brian Hay, senior Ricardo Melbourne (Spanish Town, Jamaica), junior Sammy Sesay (Hyattsville, Md./Eleanor Roosevelt), and graduate student Mike Garner (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) that posted a second-place time of 41.52.

Hay also advanced to the IC4As in the 110m hurdles after a fourth-place showing (14.42) in the event, as did Garner who was second (10.74) in the 100m dash behind Texas A&M\'s Tyrone Edgar (10.65).

Senior Ricardo Cunningham\'s (Clarendon, Jamaica) time of 1:52.04 in the 800m run was also good enough for IC4As and earned him a second-place finish behind Brian Duplechain of Texas A&M.

Also competing on Saturday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational were seniors Michael Akindele (Alexandria, Va./TC Williams), Justin Hernandez (Fairfax, Va./Oakton), Wayne Wright (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring), and Jonathan Martin (Fairfax, Va./Cal-State Fullerton) along with sophomores Andres Maldonado (Fairfax, Va./Falls Church) and Ryan McCoy (Roanoke, Va./William Fleming).
