Rain Washes Out Terrapin Track and Field Invitational For George Mason Women

Only five events were completed on the day.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- George Mason\'s women\'s track and field team traveled across the Potomac Saturday to compete in the Terrapin Invitational track and field meet on the campus of the University of Maryland. However, a severe thunderstorm and heavy rain forced the cancellation of the meet after the completion of just five events.

The event, which had drawn 40 teams from around the northeast, will not be made up.

Around 11:30 a.m., warnings of lightning in the area forced the suspension of action. After an hour of heavy rain, the facility was too wet to continue the meet in a safe fashion.

A \'B\' section of the men\'s and women\'s 5,000 meters was added to the early part of the schedule, due to a high number of entrants in that event. Those sections were completed prior to the rain, with Ashley Vann of Howard winning the women\'s 5K in 18:36.12. George Mason\'s Shannon Runge placed 10th in the event with a time of 20:03.70. Freshman teammate Danielle Turner (New Bern, N.C.) finished 24th in 21:35.99

Shane Young of Georgetown won the men\'s 3,000-meter steeplechase at 9:24.44, while Anne Martin of Yale out-kicked Carrie Strickland of Princeton to win the women\'s steeplechase in 10:57.80.

Morgan State won the women\'s 4x100 relay, which was the final event contested before the rain delay, in 47.24. George Mason\'s relay team posted a time of 51.86, finishing 20th overall.

Mason\'s women\'s track and field team will send a split squad to meets next weekend. Some athletes will head to the University of Delaware for the Delaware Invitational, being held Friday and Saturday, Apr. 8-9. The rest of the squad will go to the University of Texas for the Texas Relays, which begin Thursday, Apr. 7 and run through Sunday, Apr. 10.
