VCU women finish second at CAA Championships

FAIRFAX, Va. – The Virginia Commonwealth women's track and field team made a strong showing on day two of the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, moving up four spots from day one to finish in second overall, its best finish in the history of the program. Senior Cheri Manning (Richmond, Va./J.R. Tucker) was named the meet's Most Outstanding Performer and five Rams qualified for the NCAA Regionals.

Manning was very busy throughout the second day of competition, competing in five different events and scoring in each one. The senior earned CAA Championships in the 200m with a time of 24.77 and the 400m with a time of 55.83, qualifying herself for the NCAA Regionals in both events. She also finished fourth in the 100m.

Manning anchored VCU's 4x100m, which also consisted of junior Courtney Green (Caroline, Va./Caroline), sophomore Tesonia Twine (Richmond, Va./Meadowbrook), and freshman Sheemeca Berkley (Madison Heights, Va./Amherst County), to a second-place, season-best time of 47.06. She also anchored the 4x400m relay squad to a fourth place finish.

Junior Tanika Brown (Powhatan, Va./Powhatan) saved her best performance of the season for clutch time as well. The three-time NCAA qualifier took home the high jump crown with a leap of 5-10.75, more than five inches higher than the next competitor.

Sophomore Pia Ruth (Rahway, N.J./Linden), pictured, won the 100m hurdles title with a time of 14.73 and junior Yvette Simmons (Newport News, Va./Denbigh) earned the CAA Championship in the triple jump with a leap of 38-4.75. Both athletes earned spots in the NCAA Regionals with their championship performances.

A few Rams also earned personal bests at the meet including junior Kristina Rios (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) whose time of 2:16.23 in the 800m was good for third place. Twine scored a personal best in the 100m, with her third-place finish of 12.18. Freshman Danielle Williams (Baltimore, Md./Pikesville) also earned a personal best with her fifth-place time of 4:46.42 in the 1500m, as did Fallon Wilson (Chesapeake, Va./Hickory) with her sixth-place mark of 127-3 in the javelin.
