Bowman repeats at Penn Relays mile champion

PHILADELPHIA, PA -- Fauquier senior Sarah Bowman defended her title in the mile at the Penn Relays and did with relatively ease in a time of 4:50.62. Bowman took the lead from the start and never looked back and she was never challenged for the lead as she won by nearly a five second margin over Danielle Tauro of New Jersey (4:55.50).

The Bethel girls qualified for both finals of the 4x100 and 4x400 meter relays with impressive preliminary times of 47.04 and 3:47.21. The Bethel girls had the sixth fastest overall time in the 4x100 prelims and fastest among U.S. teams, while in the 4x400, the Lady Bethel\'s time was fourth fastest overall and second among U.S. teams. Just behind Bethel in the 4x100, the Hermitage girls were the seventh fastest qualifiers in a time of 47.66. In the finals, the Bethel girls ran a state best time of 46.54 to finish fourth overall, while the Hermitage finished sixth in a time of 47.05. The Bethel girls also finished fourth in the 4x400 finals with a state leading time of 3:47.50. Relay members and their splits for the relay were Essynce Roberts (58.4), Shakirra Pinnock (55.5), Francena McCorory (53.6), and Crystal Carrington (61.0)

Hermitage\'s Queen Harrison competed in the triple jump as she finished sixth in the event with a leap of 37-06.50.

The Lake Braddock and Midlothian girls qualified for the Championship of America finals for the 4x800 meter relay. The squads finished 9th and 12th respectively in the finals with times of 9:20.29 and 9:44.07. The Midlothian girls had posted a time of 9:23.69 in the prelims, but ran in the finals without star runner Amanda Patterson, who had competed in the 3000 meter run individualy with a sixth place finishing time of 10:07.77.

Lake Braddock\'s Ashley Haislip earned runner-up honors in the high jump with a clearance of 5-7.

Midlothian\'s Matt Feiling, who recently signed with Clemson University, threw for a state best mark of 55-0.75 to finish third in the shot put competition.

Raining conditions dampened Thomas Dale senior Dennis Boone\'s chances at repeating as long jump champion at Penn Relays as he finished fourth in this year\'s event with a mark of 22-8.50.

One of Group AA\'s best jumpers, Lafayette\'s Dakari Taylor-Watson, finished fourth in the triple jump competition with a leap of 45-10.75.

Lake Braddock senior Jon Cowden threw for the state\'s fourth best mark in the discus throw as he finished fifth at Penn Relays with a throw of 169-10.

J.R. Tucker senior Michael Chapa and E.C. Glass junior Patterson Wilhelm had solid runs in the mile at Penn as Chapa ran the state\'s fastest time with a 4:15.47 clocking to finish fourth, while Wilhelm finished a few ticks behind in seventh place with a time of 4:18.05.
