Richmond places a total of 13 on All-Conference teams following the championships.
UNIVERSITY OF RICHMOND, Va. - The Richmond track and field squad finished its season with a fourth and fifth place finish at the Atlantic 10 Championships in Richmond, Va. The Spiders, who hosted the event at Sports Backers Stadium, placed a total of 13 individuals on the All-Conference first and second teams including nine individual performances and a relay team.Seven women\'s season-bests and one individual record was set in the two-day event, helping the Spiders finish fourth as a team. Senior Margaret Banks led the charge of season-bests with a 12th-place finish in the 200 meter in 26.37. Sophomore Nicole Erby garnered a spot on the All-Atlantic 10 first team with a winning time of 2:14.86 in the 800 meter run. Junior Nicole Kurtain earned a Second Team All-Conference honor with a season-best time of 11:10.99 in the 3000 meter steeplechase to place second. Kurtain\'s time was just over eight-tenths of a second off Richmond\'s record in the event. Rounding out honors on the track was the Spiders\' 3200-meter relay. The team notched a first-place finish with a time of 9:20.92.
In the field events Richmond\'s trio of throwers recorded five season-bests and four All-Conference nods. Sophomore Lindsey Smith placed second with a season-best of 42-01.25 in the shot put. Sophomore Leslie Gleue came in fourth in the discus garnering a season-best of 134-06. Sophomore Beth Crocus won the hammer throw with a toss of 164-07, but Smith notched a season-best of 141-11 to place seventh. The Spiders\' two javelin throwers went after the Richmond record Saturday. Both broke the previous mark set by Smith earlier this season, but Smith came up with the overall record of 153-04 to win the event. Crocus recorded a toss of 152-04 to come in second.
The men set 13 season-bests to earn a fifth-place team standing. Junior Ryan Mace ran the 100 meters in a season-best time of 10.53 to place fourth. Senior Joe Mallory placed 14th in the 100 meters and also notched a season-best time of 11.31. In the 200 meter event, freshmen Andrew Harris (22.38) and Adedayo Oladejo (23.03) recorded season-best times and placed ninth and 15th, respectively. Junior Will Van Thunen picked up a 19th-place finish in the 400 meter event with a season-best 51.13.
Sophomore Rusty Burrell finished the 400 meter hurdles in 11th with a time of 1:00.13. Freshman Jonathan Molz came in sixth in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a 9:37.27. Freshman Peter Norquist recorded a season-best in the 10K with a ninth-place finish in 32:52.35. Richmond\'s 400-meter relay team ran a season-best 42.31 to place third overall.
The Spiders\' two All-Conference honors came in the triple jump and decathlon. Senior Joe Mallory went 47-07.75 in the triple jump to finish his career with a second-place finish. Senior Brett Walton ended his career with a decathlon win and a total of 6,176 points. In the field events Ryan Cameron garnered points for the Spiders in both the shot put (46-10.25) and discus (122-02), placing sixth in both.
Various athletes will have a chance to reach NCAA Regional qualifications next weekend at the Georgia Tech Last Chance meet in Atlanta, Ga. Meet action begins Friday, May 13, and ends Saturday. Results and recaps will be available at RichmondSpiders.com following all the action
