VIC Announces Recruiting Class of 2005

BRISTOL, VA -- Virginia Intermont College's cross country and track team announces an impressive initial recruiting class for the fall of 2005. Headlining the list is Virginia state mile champion Mike Chapa (4:13.85) of J.R. Tucker High School in Richmond. Chapa was also the AAA state cross country champion and has personal bests of 1:54.96 in the 800 and 9:11.12 in the 3200m. Chapa's teammate, Thuom Mathiang (1:54.55, 4:18.38) has also signed with VIC. Rounding out the state of Virginia is Casey Kreger from Meadowbrook, who boasts a personal bests of 2:01.10 for the 800.

Charles Cummings from Eisenhower High School in Yakima, Wa., has also signed with Intermont. Cummings was this year's Washington state runner-up in the mile with a 4:14.95. His personal bests include 1:57 for 800 and 9:14 for 3200m. Joining Cummings will be Colonial High School's Alvin Charles, a native of Orlando, Fl, who brings marks of 4:25 and 9:33 for the mile and 2-mile, respectively.

Ricky Ceuvas, a junior college transfer from Modesto College, will also join the Cobras in the fall. Ceuvas posted high school bests of 4:17 and 9:26 for the mile and 2-mile. Adding depth to the VIC squad will be Yuri Yuriyiovych and Christian Browne. Browne is a 400m (50) and 800m (1:53) runner.

VIC has also doubled the roster for the women's fledging program. At the top of the list is Amanda Gorst, the New Zealand junior national record holder for the 1500, mile, 3k and 5k racewalk. Gorst will lead a group of three racewalkers, as well as contribute to the cross country team. Joining Gorst will be city record holder Raven Pilgrim of Brooklyn, Ny., and Alexandra Lo Po-man from Hong Kong.

Bolstering VIC's women's cross country squad will be Esther Komen of Eldoret, Kenya who brings a personal best of 18:30 for 5k and Izolda Shchaslyva of the Ukraine who has run 16:08.72. VIC's Teresa Ayers, a member of the women's soccer team, will be devoting herself to running to help out the harriers, while the Lady Cobras also add Elizabeth Enchautegui from NJ, and Nikki Debevoise from Charlotte, NC.

Intermont is still recruiting for the year and hopes to add depth in both its sprint and jumps areas.
