SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Virginia Tech track & field athletes Spyridon
Jullien, Jacobus Smit, Brian Mondschein and Sven Hahn advanced to
their respective event\'s finals by placing in the top-12 of the
qualifying round on Wednesday at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field
Championships held at the Alex G. Spanos Sports Complex.
Spyridon Jullien (Jr., Athens, Greece) won the qualifying round of
the hammer throw with his best throw of the series 233\' (71.02m) out
of the 26 thrower-field. Jullien. the ACC and NCAA east region hammer
throw champion, and the other top-12 finishers advanced to the
finials on Friday at 2 p.m. (pacific standard time). Jullien\'s 11
competitors in the finals are (in order of finish in the qualifying
round) 2. Nick Owens (North Carolina), 3. Mattias Jons (Boise State),
4. Garland Porter (Tennessee), 5. John Paul Smolenski (Purdue), 6.
Geoff Fong (Sac State), 7. Adam Trainor (Colorado State), 8. Jake
Dunkleberger (Miami-Ohio), 9. Zack Schaefer (Wyoming), 10. Brian
Richotte (Radford), 11. Cory Martin (Auburn) and 12. Adam Midles
(Southern California). To give you an idea of his competition,
Jullien threw 15 feet farther than second-place finisher and ACC foe

Jacobus Smit (Jr., Pretoria, South Africa) finished 11th in the
qualifying round of the javelin throw with his best throw of the
series 209\'10\" (63.97m) out of the 24 competitor-field. Smit, the ACC
javelin throw champion, and the other top-12 finishers advanced to
the finials on Friday at 5 p.m. (pacific standard time). Smit\'s 11
competitors in the finals are (in order of finish in the qualifying

finials on Friday at 6:30 p.m. (pacific standard time). Mondschein\'s
12 competitors in the finals are (in order of finish in the

Young), 1. Jarno Kivioja (Northern Iowa), 1. Robison Pratt (Brigham

round of the shot put with his best throw of the series 59\'6.25\"
(18.14m) out of the 27 thrower-field. Hahn, an All-ACC selection in
the shot put, and the other top-12 finishers advanced to the finials
on Friday at 8:15 p.m. (pacific standard time). Hahn\'s 11 competitors

Also completing in the shot put was Ryan Norwood (Sr., Cheyenne,
Wyo.). Norwood ended his Hokie career by finishing 26th in the
qualifying round with a mark of 55\'8.50\" (16.98m). Norwood\'s
highlight of his career would be throwing the shot at the NCAA Indoor
Championships this year. He placed 11th and reached All-America
honors in the event.
Smit and Mondschein are the only ACC athletes in finals of their
event. Jullien and Hahn are one of two ACC athletes in their
respective event\'s finals.
