Potomac\'s Robinson dashes to national best

LANDOVER, MD -- In a meet comprising of a good mixture of Maryland and Virginia teams at the Montgomery Invitational, many Virginians came out with some solid performances.

Joe Robinson of Potomac ran the nation\'s fastest time in the 55 meter dash with a 6.26 in the prelims at the Montgomery Invitational. Later on in the day, Robinson took the win in the finals with a time of 6.34 in a competitive field which included the previous state leader, Daniel Bailey of Centreville.

Potomac Senior is fortunate to have two talented sprinters in Robinson and Kharya Brown as she posted a state best 7.24 in the 55 meter dash. Gar-Field\'s Afua Amponsah also ran a state best with her 8.25 in the 55 meter hurdles. Both of which are recent tranfers. Brown was at Gar-Field last year and Amponsah was at Annandale and has now moved onto the team of which Brown left at Gar-Field.

Gar-Field\'s Tiffany Evans maintained her supremacy in the throws with a toss of 44-4 in the shot.

Jennifer Boyd of Hickory improved her state best in the 1600 meter run with a 5:03.28 for a full mile as she won the event which is also considered as a qualifier for the elite Milrose Games in early February. Thomas Jefferson senior Shauneen Garrahan had a strong runner-up finish to Boyd with her time of 5:12.66.

Boys\' mile saw an exciting race between Wakefield\'s Peter Quinzio (4:21.24) and West Springfield\'s Jeff Day (4:22.68) with Quinzio coming out on top. Earlier in the meet, Day was a member of the winning West Springfield 4x800 meter relay team with a time of 8:04.20 as West Springfield joined Midlothian with Virginia now having the two fastest 4x800 meter relay times in the nation on a non-banked indoor track. The team consisted of Day, Tim Kwak, John Cook, and Steve Tobin.

Colonial Forge junior Jerome Miller had an impressive double win in the high jump with a state best 6-8 in the high jump and win in the triple jump (43-10). Twin brother Jason was a step behind Jerome as Jason was second in both the high jump (6-4) and triple jump (43-7).

Colonial Forge teammate Sean Leyh, who earlier in the day split a 1:57 leg on the second place finishing 4x800 meter relay, won the open event at the same distance with his time of 2:00.05.

William & Mary bound Keith Bechtol of Thomas Jefferson took the victory in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:32.48. Along with Bechtol\'s great win in the race was the exceptional finish by Chantilly freshmen Brad Siragusa who continues to amaze many this indoor track season. Siragusa nearly earned a state qualifier in the event as he clocked an amazing time for a mere freshmen with a 9:45.41.

Thomas Jefferson also had the winner in the girls\' 3200 meter run as Sarah Levine was victorious in a time of 11:27.09.

In some heated rivalry relay action in the boys\' 4x200 meter relay, it was Centreville who came out of the meet with the bragging rights for now over Washington-Lee. While Deep Creek, who set the national record in the 4x200 meter relay last indoor season, is still the dominant relay. Northern Region squads Centreville and Washington-Lee are trying to make a name for themselves behind Deep Creek. Centreville out of a slower heat clocked a 1:32.74 to finish second overall to Woodrow Wilson of D.C. as Washington-Lee finished second in the fast heat with Wilson and third overall with a time 1:32.82. Still clearly the battle has not been settled between these two.
