One of the biggest surprises of this cross country season in Virginia has been the rise of Princess Anne senior Matthew Schwartzer. While Schwartzer certainly showed signs of being capable of a strong senior year including ending his junior year of cross country with a PR run of 16:00 at Foot Locker South and also snagged the final All-State spot in the outdoor state 1600 meter race with a 4:18 8th place performance, the undefeated season and string of major invitational victories wins this fall was unexpected. While the spotlight will be on the Northern Region speedsters in defending champ Ahmed Bile and previous #1 ranked Sean McGorty along with returning 3200 outdoor state champ Adam Visokay lurking, Schwartzer is a darkhorse pick after a steady and consistent season of accomplishing only one task.
