Brentsville girls continue winning tradition, while Page County boys start one

THE PLAINS, VA -- The Brentsville girls continued dominating the Single A ranks in cross country as they won another state title as they placed 7 runners in the top 24 for a team score of 34 points. The Brentsville girls also had the individual race winner in freshmen Mindy Peele who ran away to a state title with a time of 19:49.

Taking second was the New Kent girls with 99 points, who ran without #1 runner, Eileen Wicker, who was injured with a stress fracture. The New Kent girls were able to fight through the adversity to earn the runner up honors.

The Page County boys won their first state title as they also were led by a freshmen as Todd Somers took third in a time of 17:00. The Page County boys finished 18 points ahead of second place Buffalo Gap with 71 points.

Pre-race favorite Dustin Sweeney of Clarke County held a large lead in the middle of the race, but only ended up seeing that lead disappear. He also had to see a runner with purple mohawk win the state title. Patrick Henry junior Michael Buchanan surprised all as he came across the finish line because of his hair and more importantly his placing, which was a state title winning first place finish (16:47).
