FAIRFAX, VA -- Three state meet records were set on day one of competition at the VHSL Group AAA State Meet held at George Mason University\'s indoor track facility in Fairfax. Deep Creek junior Ashley Gatling kicked off the meet record breaking day by tying her national leading height of 5\'9\" in the high jump. Mike Morrison of Great Bridge had the goal in mind heading into this weekend\'s state meet of breaking the old state meet record mark set by former great vaulter from Great Bridge, Lawrence Johnson and he certainly accomplished the feat and then some with a successful clearance of 17\'0.50\". Then in one of the most dramatic moments of the meet that few actually witnessed since the final running event was over 30 minutes ago, Centreville\'s Britni Finch nailed a jump of 19\'10\" to better a clutch 19\'1.50\" final jump from Hermitage senior Queen Harrison to win the long jump competition for the final event of day one. E.C. Glass boys lead the team scoring with 16 points thanks a personal best throw from Mike Zajac to win the shot put in 57\'6\" and a reported 1:53 anchor leg split from Carlton Phipps to finish third in the 4x800 meter relay (8:02.29). Lake Braddock girls (18 pts) held a slim half point lead over Deep Creek (17.50 pts) before tally of the girls\' long jump through the first day as they had two all-state athletes in the shot put with Theresa McCoy (3rd, 40\'0.50\") and Allison Jones (5th, 39\'11\"). However, Chantil Harvey of Deep Creek certainly placed well and scored in the long jump to move the Lady Hornets up in the first place spot. Deep Creek\'s points prior to Harvey came exclusively in the long jump with the winner Gatling, Jonee Artis (4th, 5\'6\"), and Shawanda Weston (6th, 5\'4\").
