Hampton \'s Yvette Lewis nation\'s top triple jumper

Hampton , Va. - Hampton University junior Yvette Lewis ( Newport News , Va. ) used the final indoor meet of the track and field season to turn in the top collegiate triple jump mark in the country at this weekend\'s Virginia Tech Last Chance Meet. The former Menchville High School standout posted a mark of 45-01 to finish second to Nike athlete Tiombe Hurd.

Lewis, who has won the MEAC Indoor Championship\'s Most Outstanding Performer Award two years running, will look to repeat her performance this week at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. A provisional qualifier in the 60-meter hurdles as well, she may also compete in that event with teammate Kellie Wells.

An all-american in the 60-meter hurdles a year ago, Wells returns to the championships looking to improve upon her fifth place finish in 2005. The Petersburg native also competed at the Last Chance Meet, winning the 60-meter dash in a time of 7.39 and completing the sweep with a first place finish in her signature event with a time of 8.18.
