LYNCHBURG, VA - The Vince Bradford Relays held at E.C. Glass High School in Lynchburg had some outstanding performances recorded in the meet with a total of seven state leading times and marks. The Fork Union boys snagged the lone meet record of the meet as they finally loaded up a 4x800 meter relay squad to run a time of 8:01.05 with Nike Indoor Nationals 800 meter runner-up Axel Mostrag on anchor. Fork Union also won the boys\' team title by a wide margin with 90 points, while the Blacksburg girls took top honors on the girls\' side as they were led by Annie Grant and their distance crew.
The Fork Union boys had plenty of push in the race with Group AA\'s top relay team in Fort Defiance as the Indians were close in second place at 8:03.42. Fort Defiance also won the 4x1600 meter relay by a wide margin as their time of 18:45.14 put them well ahead of second place Fork Union (19:35.94).
Fork Union\'s Mostrag came back to win the 1600 meter run with ease as he cruised the first 1200 meters at 70 second pace to close in a 62 for a 4:33.29 win. in the event.
Brandon Caleb might have had the best day for Coach Winston Brown\'s squad as he won three events on the day as he posted two personal bests in the long jump (23\'6\") and 110 meter hurdles (14.69), while having the top mark (44\'11\") in the triple jump. His mark in the long jump ranks him #10 all-time in the MileStat.com era (December 2001-present) and beats any jump by a Virginian from this past indoor season on.
Caleb was also part of the winning Fork Union 4x100 meter relay, which posted a state best time of 42.29 in the relay event.
E.C. Glass senior Mike Zajac, made a big statement in his first meet of the season by breaking his own meet record in the discus throw from a year ago by over 11 feet with his winning toss of 182\'7\". The mark easily stands as the state best by over 20 feet currently. The personal best throw for Zajac ranks him #2 all-time in the MileStat.com era behind former James Robinson great Steve Huntzinger (188\'3\" at 2003 Arcadia Invite).
A familiar rivalry was revisited in the boys\' high jump with two of the best in the Charlottesville in Albemarle\'s Anthony Albemarle and Fork Union\'s Jonathan Foote. The AAA state indoor runner-up Bryant won the event with a clearance of 6\'4\" with Foote finishing second on a tiebreaker at 6\'2\" with Rustburg\'s Kerry Cowart.
Halifax County junior Patrick Terry benefited from a strong tailwind to run a big personal best and state leading time of 10.69 in the 100 meter dash preliminaries. Terry\'s previous best in the sprint event last spring as a sophomore was a 11.10 clocking. Terry posted a time of 10.74 to win in the finals.
After finishing second in the 110 meter hurdles (15.19) to Fork Union\'s Caleb, Appomattox County senior TK Kelso came back in the 300 meter hurdles with a first place finishing time of 42.11.
The Appomattox boys also had the top 4x400 meter relay team as they posted a time of 3:27.22 in the final event of the day.
Heritage of Lynchburg did well in their hometown with two event winners in the field events between Joel Trent in the shot put (48\'3\") and Stephen Thomas in the pole vault (12\'6\").
In the 4x200 meter relay, Charlottesville rolled to the win in a time of 1:32.65.
Behind two distance relay victories and sweep by Annie Grant in the hurdles, the Blacksburg girls won the team crown with 70 points as homestanding E.C. Glass finished second with 59 points.
The Blacksburg girls set a new meet record in the 4x800 meter relay as they posted a time of 9:52.28 in the event, while winning the 4x1600 meter relay (23:23.26) by 46 seconds over Patrick Henry (24:09.76). Patrick Henry finished second in both events as they ran a time of 9:56.28 in the 4x800 meter relay.
One of Group AA\'s top hurdlers, Annie Grant was dominant on Saturday at E.C. Glass as she won both the 100 (15.32) and 300 (49.64) meter hurdles. Grant also finished second in the triple jump with a mark of 34 feet even as Rustburg\'s Amanda Daily had the top jump at 34\'5\".
Blacksburg\'s distance star Ariel Burbey also picked up ten points in a solid early season time of 5:13.63 to win the 1600 meter run.
E.C. Glass girls were tough in the relays as they won both the 4x100 (51.02) and 4x200 (1:48.01) meter relays, while finishing second (4:13.64) to William Fleming (4:12.14) in the 4x400 meter relay.
Just as the winds helped Terry to a state leading time in the boys\' 100 meter dash, the same worked for Halifax teammate Juanita Kincy in the 100 meter dash as she ran a state best time of 12.19 in the prelims of the 100 meter dash, but the same winds were not there in the finals as she ran a 12.79 clocking to win the event. Kincy also won the high jump with a clearance at 5\'2\".
Jefferson Forest senior Suzanne Lipscomb won in a tiebreaker over Charlottesville senior Elizabeth Weaver in the pole vault as both athletes cleared a height of 9\'3\".
Albemarle\'s Ashley Harris squeaked by with the win in the long jump over Desha Johnson of E.C. Glass as she was one inch better than Johnson (17\'0\") at a mark of 17\'1\".
Heritage\'s Kimberly Jones, a AA state indoor runner-up in the shot put, had the top throw in the event on Saturday with a toss of 36\'0.50\".
In the other throwing event, Rustburg\'s Kristine Kaiser threw for a distance of 116\'3\" to win the discus throw competition.
