NSU Signs Phoebus Track Standout Corey Vinston

NORFOLK, Va. — Norfolk State University men's track and field coach Kenneth Giles announced on Wednesday the signing of Phoebus High School standout Corey Vinston (Hampton, Va.) to a national letter of intent to compete for the Spartans beginning in 2006-07.

Vinston excels in multiple events for Phoebus. He recently won the state Group AAA indoor long jump title and placed fourth in the triple jump. He was named a first-team Daily Press indoor track all-star in the 55 meters, the 55-meter hurdles, the high, long and triple jumps and as a member of the Phoebus 800-meter relay team.

Vinston also made a big impression outdoors earlier this month at the Norfolk Invitational High School Relays at Dick Price Stadium, winning the 200 meters in 21.08 seconds. That was the third-fastest time ever for a Peninsula-area runner. He also won the 100 meters, 300 hurdles and triple jump, and placed second in the long jump and high jump at NSU.

"I really feel that Corey is the best all-around track and field athlete in the state," Giles said. "Schools from all over the country wanted to get him, so we're very excited he chose to come to NSU."
