Men go 1-2-3 in 5K, Champion Dumm qualifies for Regionals; Harrison also qualifies
Virginia\'s Andrew Dumm led a 1-2-3 finish in the men\'s 5K, running a stunning 14:07, 22 seconds below his previous best mark, to lead a sweep of the medals and to help the Cavalier men finish fourth at the 2006 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Winston-Salem, NC. Dumm\'s time not only qualified him for the Regional meet but also moved him into the No. 5 position all-time in Virginia history. Kevin McHale took home third in both the 800m and the 1500m runs as the men went 3-4-6 in the two-lapper while Andrew Jesien teamed with McHale to go 3-6, giving the Cavalier men 78 points in the five distance events, or 40% of the total points scored.
McHale started the day off with a 3:48.30 to take third in the 1500, while Jesien finished sixth with his 3:49.68. One hour later McHale went 1:51.79 in the 800m, just edging Tatu\'s 1:51.88 for third. Jordan Orr finished sixth at 1:52.34. Less than an hour later, Dumm led 10K Champ Ryan Foster and first-year Andy Biladeau to the 1-2-3 finish. Foster, who won the 10K on Thursday, scored 18 points for the Cavaliers over the weekend. Moments after Dumm qualified for Regionals, Emily Harrison took sixth in the 5K with her 16:40.74, which qualified her for the Regional meet.
The Virginia women used a pair of runner-up finishes to take sixth overall. Billie Jo Grant threw a collegiate personal best of 176\' 10\" in the discus to take second; her mark was just seven inches shy of the Virginia record. The women\'s 4x400m team also finished second with a season-best ; Ashley Gore and Erin Crawford both ran on that team and also scored individually. Gore finished seventh in the open quarter with a 55.62, while Crawford took third in the intermediate hurdles with her 58.72. The women\'s 4x100 team also scored, taking fourth with a 46.08.
School-record holder Tomika Ferguson just missed a medal with her fourth-place finish in the triple jump with a 42\' 0\", while Virginia also got a pair of seventh place finishes in the high jump (Meggie Schuelke, 5\' 5\") and javelin (Sarah Convery, 132\' 3\").
Shadion Buckley hit a personal-best mark in the triple to take seventh, leaping 45\' 1\". First-year Yemi Ayeni took fourth in his first-ever ACC discus competition, and Isi Azeke scored in the high hurdles, taking eighth.
