Kyle Ashley

Here is quite the list of current and former Virginia greats. This list is the top performances ever at Great American.

The Newport News Invitational saw a very early season showdown of the two runners who likely will be battling for the Eastern Region title later this season in Kellam's Bobby Peavey and Western Branch's Blake Theroux. The only definite heading into the race would be that fast times would be posted in a duel between the two as the #10 ranked (Peavey) and #11 ranked (Theroux) in the state of Virginia would meet on one of the fastest 5K courses in the state found at Newport News Park. The senior Peavey defeated the junior Theroux in their first head-to-head race of the season with a state leading 5K time of 15:32 to break the old course record of the newer version of the Newport News Park course. Photo by Brandon Miles The Jamestown Eagles have a goal of winning another Bay Rivers District title, but a district win will only be a small stepping one to their bigger goals at season's end in their quest for their first state title since 2001 and become the first team outside of Region II to win the Group AA title since the last Jamestown squad did. Coach Howard Townsend's squad has also a strong shot at vying for a Nike Team Nationals berth this fall. Jamestown won the district title in 2007 in dominant fashion with 24 points and could have a lower team score this year with all of their top seven back and only a few runners such as Warhill's Kyle Ashley as legitimate individuals in the district to break up their top five from a perfect score. The potential sweep of the district team titles is possible for Jamestown, but the Lady Eagles will be a tough fight with the defending champions from Tabb. Jamestown's Rachel Apostoles returns as the defending district champion, but a strong outdoor season this past spring from Becky Dobosy of Lafayette with a sub 12 performance in the 3200 will not allow make a repeat easy for Apostoles.
