Midlothian's Brayden Burleigh is the top seed in the freshmen boys mile as Burleigh has the nation's fastest 1600 meter time by six seconds with a 4:24 season best. (Photo by John Herzog) The state of Virginia will be represented this weekend at the 2008 Nike Indoor Nationals in Landover, Maryland. Several events are heavy with Virginians in the top sections and flights. There is little question of quite a few to become Nike All-Americans with top six finishes, but the bigger question is who will national titles? Despite suffering from the graduations of two key contributors to their dominance over the last few years in jumper April Sinkler and distance runner Brittany Copeland, the Brooke Point girls continued on with business as usual in the Commonwealth District Meet as they won their fifth straight indoor team title on Wednesday at Brooke Point High School. It was not as dominant as their past wins, but they were able to overcome a strong challenge by the Colonial Forge girls (2nd, 121 pts) with a team score of 127 points. The Mountain View boys were indoor district champions for a second year in a row as their depth in the distance events and a double win by Olu Olamigoke in the jumps helped key a decisive win for the Wildcats. Top performance in Saturday's portion of the St. Christopher's Invitational came from Western Branch senior Ermesha Fair leaping to a mark in the triple jump which puts her only a half inch away from a US #1 with her 39'6" indoor personal best triple jump to rank US #2. Other noteworthy performances included: Photo by David Fleenor The most thrilling race of the meet came in the boys 500 meter dash with only three hundredths of a second separating Douglas Freeman's Ulrick Smith (1:06.54) and Episcopal's Allante Keels (1:06.57) in the final section, but it was Taylor Sykes of Great Bridge from the previous section sneaking out the win by a hundredth of a second over Smith at 1:06.53. Stafford senior Joey Murray had one of his best runs ever in the 1000 meter run as he recorded one of the state's faster times in the event in 2:32.98 as Murray outdueled Fork Union's Jeremy Haney (2:34.74). Chris Letson won the 300 meter dash in 35.97 and also helped Lake Braddock to a 4x400 relay win under 3:30 at 3:28.47. Friday's 55 meter hurdles winner Jeffrey Artis of Western Branch may have missed out on the great triple jump competition Friday at Tech, but it did not stop Artis from uncorking a big jump of his own at Saturday in the St. Christopher's Invite with US #7 mark of 48'8.25". Great Bridge's Jayna McGehee dominating the girls 1600 field by six seconds with the state's second fastest time in the distance event of 5:04.47. A personal best for the Great Bridge senior by seven seconds. Fort Defiance's Katie Cummings made up for a subpar showing in the shot put on Friday at Virginia Tech with a win on Saturday at St. Christopher's with a best throw of 38'2.75" to set a facility record. Another facility record was broken by Jordan Grant of Centreville in the 300 meter dash as she clocked a strong flat track time of 40.94 in the sprint event to best the next fastest by 1.6 seconds. The MileStat.com Elite Track Gala has grown greatly from its first year into becoming one of the top high school post-season meets on the East Coast. The meet will feature some outstanding athletes including National champions, All-Americans, Footlocker finalists, and state champions. The events will definitely be spectator and track enthusiast friendly with the level of competition as well as some unique and exciting events as part of the meet. The featured event of the Gala will be the All-Star distance medley relay as the evening's final running event. The distance medley relay for the girls will have two stacked Virginia All-Star teams (led by Catherine White anchoring one of the relays) looking to push a team of stars from one high school in Eleanor Roosevelt of Maryland as the Blazin' Raiders (club name) are gunning for the high school national record in the event of 11:33.42 set by Bay Shore High School of New York in 2004 at Nike Outdoor Nationals. Meanwhile, the DMR for the boys has stayed true to the original intentions of the event of regional and classification pride with teams from the AAA's Central, Eastern, Northern, and Northwest Region as well as two All-Star relays from Group AA and A. A total of seven milers with times of 4:16 or faster will be on the six relays in a star studded event. Pictured to left by David Fleenor: Blacksburg's Peter Dorrell and Heritage's Nick McLaughlin battled it out to the line for the AA state title last weekend. Now this weekend at the Gala, both will be battling together to bring home the All-Star DMR title for the Group AA boys.

In the girls team race, over the last six years the outcome has been between Brooke Point and Colonial Forge, this year will be no different. The Colonial Forge Girls look as strong as ever as they look to repeat as District Champions.
