4:21 is only good enough for 7th at Nike Spring Invite 1600 Mike Spooner of West Springfield and Chris Tyson of West Springfield worked out a pre-race plan to take the first 800 meters out together in 2:04 and then Tyson would push the third lap in hopes of both attaining personal best times and possibly a run at a sub 4:10. Neither was able to come close to breaking 4:10, but Spooner earned a PR in a 4:13.31 win and their bold racing strategy made the rest of the field come along for the ride with 7 runners at 4:21 or faster for one of the deepest races one will find in Virginia in the distance event. Last year\'s VIS state champions Paul VI returns a squad that should contend to win another title this year as they have several key returnees from a year ago including a strong front three in 2005 VIS State Cross Country Championships top 15 finishers Michelle Kew (7th), Kelsey Budd (9th), and Natalie Cowden (13th). The Paul VI girls were state champions by a significant margin of 44 points last year, but only 13 points separated places two through five in the team standings as all four of the squads would like to make up ground on the defending champs this year.

That agonizing stretch of school after Thanksgiving and before Winter break has come to a close, so it\'s time for another Jois Report. Of course, we\'ll need to wait a few more weeks for Indoor to get serious, and we missed out on a few potentially high quality meets due to rough weather, including the Episcopal Relays and a FUMA meet. Nevertheless, some athletes have already put forth noteworthy performances this indoor season.
