Vincent Brown (photo by John Olson) had to settle for narrow runner-up finishes to Jeffrey Artis of Western Branch twice this year for state titles in the hurdles, but now can conclude his high school career with a national title to his name. The recent graduate of South Lakes High School, Brown struck gold in the finals of the young men's 110 meter hurdles at the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships in Greensboro with a 14.00 clocking (-1.5 wind). Brown was the only national champion from Virginia in the meet. Interview with Vincent Brown - Results

It was a strong start to the Lake Braddock Hall of Fame Invitational on Friday, which takes the place of the meet formerly known as the Allen Johnson Invitational. James Robinson's Genamarie McCant, the AAA state indoor 500 meter champ, posted a state leading time of 56.36 to run the nation's fastest time this spring by a ninth grader. The girls 3200 meter run saw a great finish between Osbourn Park junior Ariel Karabinus (11:03.10) and West Potomac junior Julianne Bigler (11:03.39). Meanwhile, Centreville's Yazid Zouaimia (pictured right by Ted Plunkett) had a big break through race to drop 20 seconds from his previous personal best to win with a final time of 9:25.66. Vincent Brown of South Lakes dropped nearly three tenths of a second off from the previous fastest time in the state with his 14.31 victory on Friday at Lake Braddock in the 110 meter hurdles. Vincent Brown made a huge drop in his 110 meter hurdle time last year at the end of season MileStat.com Elite Track Gala when he posted a time of 15.03. To think that now he is running almost a full second faster is simply hard to imagine. The South Lakes junior broke 15 seconds for the first time only a few weeks ago at the Allen Johnson Invite, yet all of sudden after this past weekend finds himself knocking on the door of breaking 14 seconds and owning the state's leading performance with his 14.10 clocking at the Draper Invitational. Brown is not the only South Lakes athlete making a name for himself this spring as the boys' team as a whole seems to becoming the school of speed in the Northern Region. His sudden drop in times will only make the AAA State Meet more interesting and competitive in the hurdles this year as Brown is anxious to prove that he belongs right with the best of them. In the finals of the young men's 110 meter hurdles at the USATF Region III Championships in Maryland last weekend, Vincent Brown (pictured left by John Herzog) clocked the fastest 110 meter hurdles by a Virginian prep since MileStat.com began with its track coverage in 2001. It is the fastest time since Rickey Harris of Centreville set the current state record at 13.50 back in 2000.   The recent graduate of South Lakes High School, Brown ran a wind-legal time of 13.91 which bests his previous state leading time of 13.98 from the MileStat.com Elite Track Gala. Brown will be headed to Southern University in Baton Rouge this fall.   There were also more than a handful of other Virginians performing well in the regional meet and look to shine at the national level at the USATF National Junior Olympic Championships in Greensboro, North Carolina in less than 2 weeks.   Bethel's Courtni Pannell, one of the top returning hurdlers for next year, won the 100 meter hurdles in a 14.74. Shakia Williams of Western Branch (12.08) and Siobhan Ford-Holland of Thomas Dale (12.09) lowered their previous 100 meter bests significantly at the USATF regional meet.   Jasia Richardson, a recent grad of J.R. Tucker and two-time AAA indoor state champion in the triple jump, finished as a runner-up to Nike Indoor Champion Brittany Porter from Georgia in the triple jump with a mark of 38'11.75".   Jamestown's Russell Hornsby, who will be transferring to Georgetown Prep in DC this fall, easily won the 800 meter run with his third straight meet producing a time of 1:55 with an identical time of 1:55.49 from Nike Outdoor Nationals.   Returning AAA state indoor shot put champion Isaiah Simmons of Woodbridge placed second in the event to Maryland state champion Marcus Brown of Quince Orchard with both throwers having a great competition as Simmons as was a runner-up by two inches at 58'8.75".   James Robinson's Joey Muzzio was a 7th place finisher at the National Scholastic Indoor Championships just missing All-American honors in the high jump. He will get another opportunity to become an All-American at the USATF National Junior Olympics after winning the Region III title with a clearance of 6'4.75".   USATF Region III Championships Results
