Barry Franklin photo courtesy of West Virginia Wesleyan

Barry Franklin of West Virginia Wesleyan College and Lance McDaniel of Concord University came into the Duke University Invitational ranked #1 and #2 in the WVIAC Conference 3000m Steeplechase. Franklin , ranked #1, had the previous West Virginia Wesleyan College Steeplechase record of 9:37.41. Franklin has also set personal bests marks in his last 5 races. McDaniel's previous best steeplechase time was 9:50 and the Concord University record was 9:46.60 set by Ryan Kent in 2008.  On Saturday, Franklin and McDaniel were in the same heat and both set school records as Franklin's school record time was 9:34.51 while McDaniel closed the gap on the two and set the Mountain Lions new record in 9:38.50. This looks to be one of the highly contested events at the WVIAC Conference championship.

Lance McDaniel after breaking the Concord 3000m Steeplechase record

Shawnee Carnett of Concord University continues to impress and break records when she steps on the track. Carnett won the 3rd heat of the 800m run by passing the entire field on the last lap as she went around the field in the 3rd lane in the first two turns and accelerated past everyone to stake her claim to another lady Mountain Lion record with a 2:12.34.

Megan Savioli of Concord University who is a powerful runner that gets up on her toes and goes did just that as she set the new Concord University 400m hurdle record in1:09.98.

Other West Virginia Wesleyan school records were set by Meghan Zayas in the steeplechase (11:09.57), Morgan Bennett in the 400 meter hurdles (64.02),  and Kevoy Douglas in the 200 meter dash (21.67).

North Carolina 7th grader, Alana Hadley, runs 17:09.38 5000m Douglas McDaniel Mar 20, 2010

I had the pleasure of watching and speaking briefly to the nations new phenom last night in Winston-Salem North Carolina as 7th grader and 13 year old Alana Hadley of Community Middle School in Charlotte, NC ran a world class 17:09.38 5000m while finishing 2nd at the Wake Forest Open. Hadley running unattached led most of the race but was beaten on the last lap by Jen Rawls of Rowan College in 17:04.38.

Confirmation is waiting to see if this is a new National record for 13 year old girls. Ususally 5000m races can be quite boring, but all eyes were fixated on this amazing young lady. She told me this was her personal best, but I suspect this new PR will not last long. I wish her the best.

It appears to be a four team race with North Marion the #1 ranked AAA girls team, the #2 team in University , #7  Preston , and #8 Morgantown. Jordan McDonald and Emma Harrison of North Marion, Lydia Martinelli  of University and Chelsea Clark of Fairmont Senior are the leading candidates to take home a region title.

For the AAA Region I boys, #2 ranked Fairmont Senior, #4 Preston, and #7 University are the team favorites. Individually, defending State champion sophomore Cody Pelliccioni and teammate Lucas Greza a junior from Morgantown are the top two ranked runners. Pelliccioni is the heavy favorite.

Schools participating in Group AAA Region I: Brooke, Wheeling Park, John Marshall, Morgantown, University, Fairmont Sr., East Fairmont, Preston and North Marion.

Group AAA Region II will be held at Elkins High School in Elkins. The 5th ranked girls from Jefferson  are the favorites with #10 ranked Buckhannon-Upshur and #12 Hampshire  as the closest competition. Individually for the girls, two time defending State Champion and junior Letitia Propst is a slight favorite over Alyssa Boucher a senior from Jefferson. Andrea Nickerson  of Jefferson is expected to make a strong showing.

Jefferson is leading the way for the AAA Region II boy’s teams as the 3rd ranked team in the State.  Brandon Doughty , the #4 ranked runner in the State, leads Jefferson. Doughty is also the favorite to win the race. Hampshire is ranked a distant 2nd.

Schools in the Group AAA Region II meet: Robert C. Byrd, Bridgeport, Buckhannon-Upshur, Elkins, Hampshire, Hedgesville, Martinsburg, Musselman, Jefferson and Washington.

Group AAA Region III will be held in Charleston and hosted by Charleston Catholic. The girl’s team and individual races are toss-ups. Greenbrier East and Woodrow Wilson  are the highest ranking girl’s teams.

For the boys, George Washington is the highest ranked team and Greenbrier East is not too far behind. Picking an individual favorite for the boy’s race is difficult. It is wide open.

Group AAA Region IV will be held at Valley Park in Hurricane. The girl’s race boasts 4 of the top 10 teams in the State. Cabell Midland and Hurricane are the #4 and #5 ranked teams in the State. Comparing their top 5 runners, only 5 points separate the two teams. However, the Hurricane team seems to have put up their times on more tested courses. The edge goes to Hurricane. #6 ranked Parkersburg  and #9 ranked Parkersburg South are ready to stake a claim if the higher ranked teams experience any problems. Alex Dent of Hurricane is favored to win.

For the boys in Group AAA Region IV, Cabell Midland gets the nod as the favorite. #5 ranked runner Jacob Burcham and heavily favored to win the region meet has been a steady force all year with continued improvements. Parkersburg South and Hurricane are outside chances to take the crown.

Pelliccioni Continues to Impress - Fastest Harrier of over 2,000+ Boys Douglas McDaniel Oct 04, 2009

Cody Pelliccioni, a junior, from Morgantown continues to dominate this 2009 Cross Country season. He has taken on all challenges and has come out on top. This past weekend, Morgantown traveled to the great State of New York and went head to head with some pretty good schools.  Pelliccioni took the McQuaid Invitational 3 mile AAA seeded race in 14:53 defeating Jay Boychuck of Ontario, Canada. Pelliccioni's time was the fastest of all competitors at the McQuaid Invitational which is a huge meet with 2,123 boys running in various 3 Mile races. To make it more amazing, Pelliccioni raced 4 days earlier in a conference meet.

Pelliccioni has had a season for the history books. Earlier in the year, Morgantown traveled to Pennsylvania and he took 2nd at the Red, White, and Blue Classic. Morgantown also traveled to Virginia and Pelliccioni took the crown at the Oatlands Invitational.

Do not be surprised if he continues to do great things in the future. He is a special talent.
